Music Widgets
The HTC One X comes with the HTC Sense UI which provides its default music player widget. This is essentially and app with basic controls which can be used from the homescreen. You then simply tap the app interface to open it fully where you can then carry out any functions of a music player on a computer like Windows Media Player or iTunes. There are numerous alternative widgets available besides the standard one, available from HTC Hub and Google Play.

In order to transfer music from your computer onto the phone (or any other files for that matter) it is simply a case of connecting the two using the supplied micro USB cable. Then simply locate you music folder and open the phone’s music folder on the desktop, and simply drag and drop the music you wish to transfer. When you do this, all relevant data will be transferred such as song titles, album title, artist info and alum art etc, all of which will be displayed on the phone.

The HTC One X is capable of performing the same tasks and many other smartphones, but with the addition of Beats Audio and the slick new Android Ice Cream Sandwich operating system it does it with a bit more flair. Rather than aim to create an entirely new device, the Blackberry Torch 9810 simply brings the original up to date, and able to compete with a number of handsets which available at the time. Overall, the Blackberry Torch 9860 is an ideal phone for existing Blackberry fans, and those who prefer the functionality of a Qwerty keyboard. Blackberry Torch 9860
The spec list of the Blackberry Torch 9860 reads largely the same as the Torch 9810. It shares key features such as the same 1.2 GHz single core processor, the same web browsing capabilities, operating system and camera specifications. The biggest, and certainly the most noticeable difference though is design of the handset and more specifically, the screen. This version of the Torch does not have the slide out Qwerty keyboard, instead opting for a much larger screen which covers the front of the device. The screen measures up at 3.7 inches and boasts a pixel resolution of 480x 800, making it an ideal choice for those who are fans of Blackberry smartphones but prefer the functionality of a full touchscreen. Unlike these phones though, within these dimensions is a whopping pixel resolution of 720x 1280, resulting in a pixel density of 342ppi. This offers great brightness, colour rendering (of up to 16 million colours), and wide viewing angles, which enhances its properties as a multimedia device. This technology also means that, in conjunction with its powerful 1.5 GHz dual-core processor, the screen is highly responsive making it ideal for gaming and general navigation of the TimeScape user interface. The screen on the Sony Xperia S supports multi touch input as you may expect but interestingly, it can register up to 10 points of contact. Aside from gaming, the applications of this feature may be somewhat few and far between, but it is certainly an impressive feat, as most other smartphones can support two or three points of contact.

The Sony Xperia S has an ambient light sensor located at the top of the screen, next to the speaker grill. This performs an impressive behind the scenes task of constantly monitoring light levels, allowing the screen to automatically adjust its brightness. This is particularly useful if you are viewing the screen outside, as most smartphones struggle to provide adequate levels of brightness to counteract sunlight, resulting in a mirror like effect on the screen. With the Sony Xperia S, this problem is all but eliminated thanks to this ambient light sensor feature.

Although not the most glamorous or interesting aspect of a smartphone’s spec sheet, the screen is important for the overall user experience for many reasons. The Sony Xperia S and the Samsung Galaxy S2 are the manufacturers’ current flagship devices, both offering a number of great features. In this article I will compare the two devices so you can decide for yourself which one comes out on top.

The Sony Xperia S is the newest handset of the two, released nearly a year after the Samsung Galaxy S2, so naturally, it has some more up to date specs. These include a more powerful dual-core processor at 1.5 GHz, giving it substantially more computing power compared to the 1.2 GHz dual-core processor of the Samsung device. It also has a more advanced camera in terms of both its resolution, at 12 megapixels over the Samsung’s 8 megapixels, and it also has some more modern features such as 3D sweep panorama mode and Multi Angle modes. The screen is also an area where there are some notable differences. Although the dimensions of the screen are the same on both handsets, the Sony handset packs a whopping 720p (HD) resolution screen of 720x 1280 compared to the seemingly standard 480x 800 offered by Samsung.

Although the Sony Xperia S comes out on top in all the areas mentioned thus far, there are a few features where the Samsung Galaxy S2 is the clear winner. The screen may not have the resolution to match Sony, but it tests have already shown that its Super AMOLED Plus capacitive touchscreen offers better black display as well as wider viewing angles. Also, the handset comes with substantially more storage capacity. With two versions available offering 16 GB or 32 GB, the Samsung Galaxy S2 also comes with expandable microSD storage, providing much more potential storage capacity compared to the fixed 32 GB of the Sony Xperia S. Other areas where the Samsung wins include the weight of the handset (116 grams versus 144 grams), a higher resolution front-facing camera (2MP over 1.3MP on the Sony Xperia S) and even a more advanced version of Bluetooth despite being nearly a year older than its rival.

Although the aforementioned features vary greatly in their importance and significance to the end user experience, there are also several features which these handsets share in common. Both offer 1080p video recording from their cameras, and both run Android Gingerbread with confirmed Ice Cream Sandwich updates rolling out to both shortly. Additionally, both also have hardware which is more than capable of running any apps downloaded from Google Play (the recently rebranded Android Market).

Because each of these handsets have a number of features which the other does not, it is hard to pick a clear winner. On paper, the Sony Xperia S may have the edge as the majority of its specifications are newer, but choosing between the two is likely to come down to preference for factors like the design or a particular brand over the other. Whichever you choose, you are unlikely to be disappointed. The Sony Xperia S offers some of the most up to date technology out there, whilst the Samsung Galaxy S2 has proven wildly popular; over 20 million users can’t be wrong!

The HTC Radar is one of two new HTC devices released to showcase the latest version of the Windows Phone Mango operating system. In this article I will look at how the device performs as a camera phone.

The HTC Radar packs a 5 megapixel camera, which is found on the back of the handset, located at the top and slightly to the left. Because this is a 5 mega pixel camera, the resolution of 2560x 1920 ensures that you will end up with good quality images almost every time. On the 3.8 inch S-LCD capacitive touchscreen of the device, photos look good, and will only begin to pixelate after you have zoomed in to the photo to some degree. If you are looking for a high end camera phone, the HTC Radar is not your best option, and you would be better off with a camera with a higher pixel resolution like the HTC Titan (8 megapixels) or the Sony Xperia S (12 megapixels). But if you only intend to use the camera on occasion or just for spontaneous snapshot, the quality of which do not matter too much, then the HTC Radar is a good choice. As an added bonus, the camera is also easy to use, thanks to the Windows Phone Mango OS interface. The camera interface is well laid out, with the capture button within easy reach, and all settings listed down the side. The settings include image enhancing features like autofocus and LED flash. These can be set to your liking, or to automatic which takes the guesswork out of getting the best results.

The camera is also capable of capturing video footage. Although not at the 1080p of many high end smartphones, it is able to capture video footage in resolutions of up to 720p which is classed as high definition. Therefore, the quality of video footage is very good and can even be wirelessly streamed to compatible TVs via DLNA connectivity. Other options for sharing your handiwork include instant uploading to Facebook, Twitter, YouTube and Flickr, and of course more traditional formats like MMS and email, to which photos and videos can be attached.

Although the camera on the HTC Radar is by no means cutting edge, and it will not win any awards for innovation, it does offer an easy to use camera which provides good results. Unless you need a high performance camera, the HTC Radar should provide everything you need from a camera phone.

When it comes to Android smartphones, the HTC Sensation XE and the Samsung Galaxy S2 are two of the best. The HTC Sensation XE until recently was the most powerful smartphone in the world, whereas the Samsung Galaxy S2 proved massively popular throughout 2011. In this article I will compare some of the key features of these handsets so you can decide which is the best.

What do they share in common?
Before I look at the differences, it is worth mentioning that both phones share several similar features. For starters, they both have 8 megapixel cameras which are capable of capturing 1080p video and come with all the extras you would expect; autofocus, LED flash, touch focus, image stabilisation and face detection all included. Results are calculated by level of the test at which you fail to reach the marker before the next beep. This app uses GPS also. The test is based on having the markers at a certain distance. Unless you have measuring equipment, this is almost impossible to do accurately, but thanks to the GPS functionality of the iPhone 4S, your location will be marked on a map and so will the point at which your markers need to be placed. This is a very handy app for fitness enthusiasts, as it provides the full bleep test and replaces the need to use measuring equipment.

If you are on a tight budget when looking for a new smartphone, the HTC Wildfire S and HTC Explorer both make ideal choices. They offer a number of features usually reserved for more expensive smartphones but are both much more affordable than you may initially think. Camera

The HTC Wildfire S has a 5 megapixel camera, with a number of image enhancing features included as standard. These include autofocus, LED flash and face detection. Operating System
Interestingly, and somewhat surprisingly for their low prices, both the HTC Wildfire S and the HTC Explorer both have the Android Gingerbread platform as their operating system of choice. This was the latest version until very recently, and even most high end smartphones have still not received the Ice Cream Sandwich update. This means that the HTC Wildfire S and the HTC Explorer share the exact same operating system as many high end smartphones like the HTC Sensation and Samsung Galaxy S2. This means that users can fully benefit from the downloadable apps provided by the Android Market, and the highly customisable HTC Sense UI.

Processor
Both the HTC Wildfire S and HTC Explorer pack a 600 MHz processor under the surface to provide the computing power necessary to run multiple applications, and provide power to various aspects of the hardware. The single-core 600 MHz processor found in each is by no means as powerful as the chipsets found in the majority of higher end smartphones, but for carrying out everyday tasks and occasional multimedia functions, the processors are more than capable. If you intent to use your phone for multi tasking or frequent multimedia use it may be a good idea to look elsewhere.

Although neither of these phones is cutting edge, they do offer a great deal of features for their relatively low price tags. If you wish to pick up the SIM free versions, the HTC Explorer will set you back £109.99, and the HTC Wildfire S costs £164. Both are also available from most major UK networks, with several offering the handset for free on selected tariffs.
