Crazy, Stupid, Love
A happily married family man is shocked when his wife asks for a divorce. Now he’s trying to manage the relationship with his kids while finding himself thrust back onto the dating scene. When he realises he’s too deeply uncool to pick up women he enlists the help of a stylish life coach (Gosling). The directors of I Love You Phillip Morris (who wrote Bad Santa before that) bring something wonderfully subversive and entertaining to the ‘marital crisis’ sub-genre. This has the honesty of a good indie movie with the appealing gloss of a Hollywood picture.
Super 8
I’m pretty sure there is more to that but in typical J.J. Abrams style, the story concerning this film is is being kept close to the chest. However, Super 8 has got people interested for that exact reason – it is after all done by the guy who kept people guessing for nearly six years about what was happening on Lost. Mind you, people still are.
Midnight in Paris
Late-era Woody has been an interesting phenomenon to watch, as his occasional hits (Vicky Cristina Barcelona) and stupefying misses come hard on each other’s heels. This year’s offering in his recent “Cities I Have Loved” series is set in Paris, and of course, given the setting and the auteur, is a heady love story. But more importantly, Midnight in Paris is also an exploration of nostalgia, the artistic impulse, and even happiness itself. It’s an entertaining and sometimes hilarious film that belongs squarely in Allen’s “hit” column.
The Artist
It’s 1927 in Hollywood and while a silent movie star wonders if the arrival of talking pictures will cause him to fade into oblivion, he sparks with a young dancer set for her own big break. The movie is shot as if it’s a silent black and white from the ’20s, and while no dialogue might sound daunting, it reminds us that as much, if not more, can be communicated by the face. The Artist is just a fantastic idea, brilliantly executed.
Captain America: The First Avenger
During World War II, skinny Steve Rogers volunteers for an Allied research project which turns him into super soldier ‘Captain America’. Soon he is up against Red Skull, Hitler’s head of weaponry, who intends to use a tesseract as an energy-source for world domination. This is an enjoyably old-fashioned adventure set apart from other comic book movies by its ’40s atmosphere. The set pieces serve the narrative rather than the other way round and its filled with enjoyable, shaded performances.
Bridesmaids
Krisen Wiig is brilliant, and unlike The Hangover, which was basically a long comedy sketch, Bridesmaids is actually a movie. Even in the bro-dominated pantheon of film comedy, it’s going to have staying power. Wiig should feel proud about an outstanding performance in a very good film.
Paul
Two British sci-fi geeks go on a road trip through America. On the way, they discover an escaped alien named ‘Paul’ (nicely animated, and voiced by Rogen) near Area 51. As they try to reunite him with his mothership, they find Paul has many more opinions than your typical ET. Pegg and Frost are one of the great comedy double acts and here they have good material to work with. They’re also backed up by a terrific supporting cast of American comedians. Every character can crack a good joke, that’s a rare thing, and that’s what makes this a really fun movie, even if it’s not up there with Shaun Of The Dead.
Source Code
Jake Gyllenhaal is the lead in this detective sci-fi thriller. When a train explodes, presumably due to a bomb rather than savage raccoons, Gyllenhaal is inserted into the “code” (consciousness) of one of the passengers to relive the event and discover what really happened. Having only 8 minutes to do so each time, the limit to the insertions, and with time slowly running out, Source Code could prove to be one of the most exciting films of 2011.
The Tree of Life
Terrence Malick’s sixth film in 42 years is, without a doubt, the most ambitious film that will come out this year. In two-and-a-half hours, the writer/director tackles every big question about God through a mid-20th-century coming-of-age story, long shots of the natural world, heavenly voiceovers and yes, dinosaurs. It’s a beautiful, thoughtful, emotional, disorienting and sometimes frustrating film, and your enjoyment will depend on how much you buy into Malick’s very personal and very singular vision.
The adventures of tintin
The “animated” aspect of Steven Spielberg’s one-two punch this year is a dazzling experience, full of the director’s trademark cinematic energy. It’s his best film in a long time. The experience put a smile on my face and kept it there. It’s Spielberg invigorated, the performance-capture and animation process allowing him to do things with the camera that he had only dreamed of, conjuring angles and set-pieces that surely have existed only in his head for decades, but now have the freedom to run wild on the screen. The film is simply a landmark of visual conception, briskly paced, assured in its capacity to entertain.

The fun comes in trying to work out paths and routes through the levels. There are 60 levels to traverse, which range from easy to mind-numbingly difficult, but they all share one thing in common; that they are beautiful to look at.
Inspired by the classic children’s book Le Petit Prince, the game is also very atmospheric as it’s mostly black-and-white — contrasting the world of light and dark — as the name of the game suggests. “Contre-jour” is a photography effect referring to when a subject is in front of the sun or other light source.

This is a game of moments: some as small as watching a deer hop into the bushes, others more revelatory and world-changing. But each one is powerful. It’s an intimate game that makes you feel like it was created solely with you in mind.
Sword & Sworcery EP is the story of The Scythian, a female warrior who is on a mission to retrieve The Megatome. Sword & Sworcery EP is a lot like the experience of playing the game itself. Depending on what angle you’re looking at it from, you’ll get an entirely different perspective. A masterful collaboration between artist and game designer Craig Adams, musician Jim Guthrie, and the gang over at Capybara Games (Critter Crunch, Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes), this is a title that is smashingly new-school in its extreme old-school-ness.
A cast of interesting stock supporting characters gently support the story and provide comic relief while staying mostly out of the way. Visually, the game is unlike anything you’ve ever seen before while still feeling instantly familiar. Craig Adams brings a unique form of pixel art to the game, evocative of the ancient gaming era of the Amiga and Commodore 64, without actually working directly in either style. I admire its visual style, a lush, proto-Bohemian echo of King’s Quest tableaux from the Apple II era. Coupled with the gorgeous visual style is an equally attractive sound design. This is a game that practically demands to be played with headphones on. Simple inputs that work extremely well for the touchscreen environment get your hands out of the way as much as possible, keeping you looking for necessary details or just enjoying the scenery.
Dead Space
Maybe Dead Space for iPad has been designed with the more experienced gamer in mind. Because it’s a gutsy, thrilling and extremely difficult adventure that challenges a player’s skills, endurance and psyche.
Let me start by saying this game is not for the timid. There are gruesome creatures, nightmarish visions and lots and lots of blood. Dead Space for iPad is part of the well-know horror series, Dead Space. However, instead of simply being a rehash of previous game events, this version presents an entirely new story and lead character.
The lead character is simply known as Vandal, a person kept anonymous through the use of very thick armor and a voice disguiser. Vandal is part of an extremist church group/cult that tricks him or her into releasing a bunch of alienified humans, called Necromorphs, into a space mining station. Vandal is then trapped, forced to fight his or her way through a slew of disgusting creatures in order to survive.
The fighting style of the game cleverly uses the touchscreen in a way I really think that’s great. Its setting, plot, and combat feed into this rich atmosphere, making the title feel as if it were a cohesive whole. It really sucks you in. Combining amazing graphics and a compelling story, this game really makes you feel as if you’re fighting for your life, dashing through an endless labyrinth of corridors, wondering what God-forsaken creatures you’ll come across next.
Finally, while this game may be a bit too bloody for my taste, it definitely deserved to win Game of the Year. It’s evocative, unique and thrilling in a way I really like.

Flips can be done by swiping both fingers vertically. There’s a multiplier system going on for unbroken streaks, and an excellent progression structure, but what makes Touch Grind BMX exceptional is its crisp and responsive controls. There also are more complicated tricks, but the basics make sense based on where the fingers are placed on the bike. As a result, the controls feel natural.
Touchgrind BMX has some great graphics. There are various locations to ride displayed on a globe. There are plenty of extras to find and explore, including goals and scoring medals and challenges, along with a nice replay mode that even lets you send videos off to YouTube and Facebook.
Tiny Wings review
Tiny Wings was chosen as the iPhone Game of the Year in App Store Rewind 2011 in Europe and many other countries.
Tiny Wings doesn’t have as much depth as games like Angry Birds and Infinity Blade, but it’s impressively simple and satisfying, and gorgeously presented. Overall, it’s a delicious slice of mobile-gaming pie.
The game may be easy to understand and even simpler to play, but the up-and-down motion, use of color and sound, and rhythmic nature of play all come together to allow you to lose yourself in the kinetic motion of your bird. You touch your finger to the screen to get the bird to dip, trying to fit perfectly into the downward slope of hills and then let go after it gains speed, but that’s enough. You’ll be forced to weigh each situation, making choices between speed and getting coins, and the game gives you a variety of tasks to accomplish in order to get a new nest. The goals and rewards are both humble, but they’re enough to keep the player locked into the game, working towards those slight rewards.
I could go on saying more nice things about Tiny Wings, but I’d rather get back to playing.

Unfortunately, recording or continuous playback are features that are sorely missing from the free app.

Another developer to release a free version of their paid game, Candy Cane are offering Fuzzle Christmas for free. The free version does have its limitations – not all levels are available – but if you want to keep your kids busy for a bit with the ornament themed game – it will do the trick. Align five ornaments next to each other to make them disappear, while making sure the board doesn’t fill up.
