The Vampire Diaries is an American supernatural-fantasy horror television series. The series is based on a book series of the same name by L.J. Smith, and was developed for television by Kevin Williamson and Julie Plec. The Vampire Diaries premiered on The CW on September 10, 2009 and was renewed for a second season that premiered on September 9, 2010. The first season was released on both DVD and Blu-ray formats in the United States and Canada on August 31, 2010.

The Vampire Diaries follows the life of Elena Gilbert (Nina Dobrev), who falls for a century-old vampire named Stefan Salvatore (Paul Wesley). Their lives grow more and more complicated as Stefan’s vicious brother Damon (Ian Somerhalder) returns to town with a vendetta against his brother. The series is set in the fictional town of Mystic Falls, Virginia, a town charged with supernatural history. Other storylines revolve around the other inhabitants of the town, most notably Elena’s younger brother Jeremy (Steven R. McQueen), Elena’s friend Bonnie Bennett (Katerina Graham), who discovers that she is a witch, and their insecure friend Caroline Forbes (Candice Accola), who is turned into a vampire.

Since Elena (Nina Dobrev) simply can’t refuse an invitation to a ball — even one that’s being held at Klaus’s (Joseph Morgan) mansion — Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Stefan (Paul Wesley) decide they most both accompany her. Both Caroline (Candice Accola) and Matt (Zach Roerig) get asked to the party by surprising dates.

Elena is unsure of who to trust when she discovers terrifying news of a plan that could cause several deaths. Get ready, Foriginal ‘shippers. Caroline sees Klaus in a whole new light. The ball doesn’t go well for everyone, however. After the bloody evening, Damon discovers a different way to deal with his disappointment.

Elena (Nina Dobrev) is surprised to receive an invitation to a formal ball, and when Damon (Ian Somerhalder) and Stefan (Paul Wesley) hear the party is being hosted at Klaus’s newly renovated mansion, they both insist on attending the event with her. Caroline (Candice Accola) and Matt (Zach Roerig) also receive invitations to the ball from unexpected admirers. At the elegant party, Elena learns of a horrifying plan that could lead to numerous deaths and she must decide who she can trust wither her new information. Caroline discovers a side of Klaus (Joseph Morgan) no one would have suspected. Finally, after an evening of violence and dashed hopes, Damon finds a new way to cope.
