Anthony Crolla emerged victorious in his final fight before retirement, but the triumph carried an element of controversy on Saturday night at the Manchester Arena.
The hometown hero won by majority decision over Spain’s Frank Urquiaga, although many believed he was fortunate to get the nod from the judges.
After an emotional last ring walk in front of his loyal supporters, Crolla endured some tough opening rounds as his opponent started fast.
Urquiaga began the bout well, landing effective body shots to trouble ‘Millon Dollar’ who was told to relax in the corner by trainer Joe Gallagher early on.
Crolla warmed into the fight in the middle rounds and began to pull the scores closer in the ten-rounder, however the Spaniard regained control and subdued the Manchester crowd at times.
This was not the case for the final three minutes though, as Crolla’s name rang out around the Manchester Arena one final time and he gave his all to battle to the final bell in his last stand.
Despite some observers, including TV commentators, believing Urquiaga had done enough to get the victory, when the scores were read out Crolla claimed a majority decision win: 95-95, 98-92, 97-93.
“I definitely thought I’d done enough, but I know time’s up now,” the former WBA lightweight world champion said in his post-fight interview.
“I’ve had a great career and loved every minute of it, but I know it’s time to go now.
