Everton released a statement on Monday, providing a positive update on Gomes, which read: “Everton Football Club can confirm Andre Gomes underwent surgery to repair a fracture dislocation to his right ankle earlier today and the procedure went extremely well.

“The Portugal international will now spend some time recovering in hospital, before returning to USM Finch Farm to start his rehabilitation under the guidance of the club’s medical staff.

“The 26-year-old is expected to make a full recovery. On behalf of André, the Club would like to thank all Everton supporters and members of the wider football family for the overwhelming messages of support we have received since yesterday’s match.”

Gomes is expected to be sidelined for anywhere between six months and a year given the seriousness of the injury.

Son was dismissed for the challenge, despite referee Martin Atkinson initially showing the South Korea international a yellow card.

The Spurs star was left in tears after the incident and players from both teams consoled him.

Everton manager Marco Silva also refused to criticise the forward for his tackle, insisting Son didn’t try to intentionally hurt Gomes, while Toffees captain Seamus Coleman led a group of Everton players into the away dressing room after the match to give the Tottenham star their support.

Cenk Tosun scored a stoppage-time equaliser for the Toffees which cancelled out Dele Alli’s second-half opener.

Goalscorer Tosun has described how he comforted Gomes as his team-mate screamed in pain following the horrendous injury.

“Everybody is sad inside. Some players, they nearly cried,” said the Turkey international

“He was in shock, his eyes were open so big. He was like crying, shouting and screaming.

“I just tried to hold him and speak to him. I tried to tell him to stay calm. We couldn’t understand him.
