NFL UK ‘would never say no to an opportunity’ amid reports Los Angeles Chargers could relocate to London

The UK NFL fan base is robust enough to embrace more games each year, talkSPORT has been told, amid reports the Los Angeles Chargers could move to London.

A team in the England capital has been mooted for some time with the Jacksonville Jaguars thought to be the most likely to move.

The Athletic report the possibility of the Chargers moving to London has been broached by league personnel.

The Chargers moved to Los Angeles in 2017 from San Diego but have struggled to develop a fan base.

The LA sports market is already crowded and moving the team to London, where there is a hunger for more games and a ready-made stadium at Tottenham, would tick multiple boxes.

NFL UK managing director Alistair Kirkwood told talkSPORT on Sunday, before the reports surfaced, that they will embrace every opportunity that is thrown their way.

“I will let you into a secret. Over the last however many years we’ve been doing this I have never said no to an opportunity,” Kirkwood said.

“Every single time they’ve said can we go to multiple games? Can we do back-to-back? Can we do this, can we do that? My starting point is yes because I believe in our fan base, I believe this sport is amongst the best around and whatever is thrown to us as an opportunity we will all embrace.

“Maybe I’m a little bit too optimistic about that but so far the fan base has proven that out and has never let us down no matter what we’ve actually experienced.

“If you look at it, it’s not like we have the best and most attractive games. The previous year you are predicting what could be a great game and what couldn’t be.

“Today’s (Sunday) game is a truly must win game for both. You can feel the level of anxiety and stress with both teams. We haven’t always had that for every single game to be honest, but come through thick and thin our fan base supports us.”

The 2019 London games ended on Sunday with the Houston Texans beating the Jaguars 26-3 at Wembley Stadium.

It was the 28th match to have been played in the city with more than two million fans in total attending the games.
