Barcelona are too reliant on Lionel Messi believes Arsene Wenger, who says they are ‘playing like a team in crisis’.

On Tuesday, they were held to a frustrating 0-0 draw at home to Slavia Prague in the Champions League as their patchy form continued.

It followed on from a 3-1 loss away to Levante on Saturday, a third league defeat of the season, and a laboured 2-1 win over Slavia in Prague.

The Catalans looked poor and a lack of cutting edge was apparent, with Messi being thwarted by goalkeeper Ondrej Kolar, while he also struck the post in the first-half.

And according to former Arsenal manager Wenger, Barcelona looked vulnerable with too much expected of their superstar forward.

Speaking to beIN Sports, he said: “Top of their league, top of their [Champions League group] and they play like a team in crisis.

“Their game play is too slow, there is no dynamism and too individualistic in the final metres.

“When they lose the ball they look like they could concede a goal on the counter because they aren’t closing down the space for the opponent.”

Wenger later added: “Barcelona are an interesting case because they have a history of brilliant collective team play and on top of that came Leo Messi who made the difference. Today it seems they play and they wait for Messi to do something – and the basic team play has gone.

“Before the music was that fantastic team play and then on top of that cane Messi. Today they have lost their charisma and you have to ask how much the last two Champions League failures have affected that team.

“From outside it seems they’ve lost a bit of charisma.”

Wenger, meanwhikle, is among the candidates to be named Bayern Munich’s new boss.

The Frenchman has been out of football since leaving Arsenal in the summer of 2018, having spent 22 years in charge of the north Londoners.

He has been linked with many jobs in the period since, including Italian giants Milan last month.
