Noel Gallagher is hoping Raheem Sterling will finally get his revenge on Liverpool fans this weekend by scoring the winner in front of the Kop and ‘cupping his ear’ to the crowd.
Sterling has been cast as a villain in Merseyside ever since his sour Reds exit in 2015, with supporters booing his every touch whenever he faces his old club.
It seemed to affect his performances, too. The England ace had failed to score in ten games against the Reds, before ending that hoodoo in August’s Community Shield at Wembley – after which he was filmed posing for photos with Liverpool fans.
The rivals will meet for the first time since that game at Anfield on Sunday with Sterling in the form of his life with 14 goals and five assists from 16 appearances.
And, while the post-match scenes at Wembley suggested there was no longer any ill-feeling, City fan Gallagher told talkSPORT he ‘dreams’ of seeing Sterling respond to the Liverpool hate in the best possible way.
“If you ask any City fan what the dream scenario is on Sunday, it’s Sterling scoring the winner,” the rock legend said on Friday’s Alan Brazil Sports Breakfast.
“They savaged him up there when he left for us, they threw him under the bus. That mob up there still boo him, they hate him.
“If I could have one dream, it would be for Sterling to score the winner in front of the Kop and just cup his ears and say, ‘yeah, go on, what about that!’”
Defending champions City go into Sunday’s Premier League title showdown six points adrift of their rivals and without a victory at Anfield since 2003.
Gallagher admits his side look ‘wounded’ this season, suggesting two straight title wins and all the cup victories in between have taken their toll on the squad.
They have already lost twice in their opening 11 games and they head into this game with a number of their key players on the sidelines.
Gallagher admits the title race will likely be over if Jurgen Klopp’s men get one over Pep Guardiola’s team.
But, he says if Liverpool somehow don’t win the Premier League title this season, they never will.
Joining talkSPORT live from New Zealand, where his High Flying Birds band are supporting U2, Gallagher said: “I think it’s a bigger game for Liverpool.
“As a team we’re limping into that game, we’ve got four or five big players out – Sane, Rodri, Laporte, David Silva. Every City fan will take a draw now.
“If Liverpool don’t win the title this season, they’ll never win it.
“We’re a little bit wounded this year and I think some of their players might get tapped up by somebody else if they don’t win.
“Saying that, if Liverpool do win [on Sunday], I’d be thinking [the title race] is over. If we were nine points ahead of them I’d be thinking privately they aren’t going to catch us.
“We can go there and win, but Liverpool are dynamite at the minute so it’s going to be tough.”
