Mikel Arteta has been backed as the perfect man to replace Unai Emery as Arsenal manager.
talkSPORT pundit Tony Cascarino says the north Londoners have become ‘divided’ under Arsene Wenger’s successor, and believes Arteta would help to unite the club and their frustrated fans.
The former club captain has been linked with the Gunners job again with pressure increasing on current boss Emery.
Arteta was one of the club’s top candidates for the role following Wenger’s departure last year, but he ended up staying under the wing of Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola, where he has been assistant since 2016.
The former Spain midfielder is said to be having a great influence behind the scenes at the Etihad Stadium, with Guardiola even tipping him to succeed him as boss, and has reportedly rejected a number of jobs to remain at City.
But recent reports claim he is back on Arsenal’s radar with Emery facing an uncertain future, and Cascarino has urged the Gunners to make the appointment happen.
“There are managers out there, but I said three years ago Mikel Arteta would have been the one [I picked],” the former Chelsea striker said on the Weekend Sports Breakfast.
“If you read about all the stuff about Arteta at Man City behind the scenes, I felt he would be a great fit for Arsenal and I think he would take it to a new direction.
“His English is far better than Emery’s and he would be a massive plus for Arsenal if they chose to make that decision.
“Arsenal have to be brought together. There are a very divided club from their fanbase.
“Their fanbase is totally divided; they were over Wenger, they are over Emery and they are over the players in their team. It’s where the club is.
“Some has got to convince Arsenal fans who are doubters that they’re on the right track.
“Unai Emery hasn’t done that. He hasn’t convinced arsenal fans who done believe he is the right man.”
