Romelu Lukaku has claimed Manchester United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer wanted him to stay at Old Trafford.

The Belgium ace left the Red Devils on transfer deadline day to join Inter in a £73million move.

Following his exit, Solskjaer said back in August ‘it was time for Rom to go’ as he struggled for regular goals in his second season at the club.

However, Lukaku insists that’s not what his old boss said to him before he departed for Italy.

“Solskjaer has my eternal respect,” he told Dutch newspaper Het Belang van Limburg. “He understood me when I said in March that it was time for me to leave.

“I have been in the Premier League as an 18-year-old boy and now I am 26. Solskjaer wanted to keep me, but I was ready for something new.”

Lukaku has made an immediate impact following his move to the San Siro, scoring nine goals in 12 league games for Inter.

However, he has also suffered racial abuse from opposing fans on a number of occasions.

But the striker insists he is happy at his new club and was fully prepared for the abuse he has faced from some supporters.

“I knew it would happen,” he added.

“I was prepared because I had spoken to other footballers about it.

“But I’m having a good time in Italy. The people on the street are very good to me and it’s on that, that I want to focus.”
