Yaya Toure blames former agent Dmitry Selyuk for fallout over infamous Man City cake incident

Manchester City legend Yaya Toure has blamed his former agent Dmitry Selyuk for the infamous birthday cake incident which made him a laughing stock.

Selyuk famously questioned Toure’s future at the club in 2014 after claiming City had not sufficiently marked the occasion of his 31st birthday.

Reports at the time suggested the Ivory Coast midfielder wanted to leave the club as a result, but he has now revealed the impact those controversial comments had.

“It’s crazy,” Toure told The Times.  “The birthday cake damaged me a lot.

“When people see me in France or Africa, they say ‘You want cake?’ I was so pissed [off]. I was telling him [Selyuk], you should not do that, no need.

“I talked with Khaldoon [Al Mubarak, City’s chairman], and I was saying, ‘It is not me, don’t worry’.

Toure, who is currently playing in China, parted company with Selyuk in August and said there were many things he did which were not particularly helpful – even though he does praise the agent for some of his work.

The midfielder added: “The bad mistake I did was doing [tweeting] ‘OK, he [Selyuk] is right’.

“That’s the one that’s killing me. People started to believe what he said is me. The fans were reading this, thinking bad about me, and I can understand it.

“Before the birthday cake I accepted it [Selyuk’s antics], because I respect [him].

“You have to give him credit too, because he has helped me through a lot. But he did a lot of bad things. It was too much.”
