Clive Allen was shocked by the timing of Mauricio Pochettino’s sacking as Tottenham manager.

The Premier League club announced on Tuesday that Pochettino had been relieved of his duties following a poor start to the season.

Pochettino guided the club to the Champions League final last season but the club have struggled domestically in 2019 and currently sit 14th in the league table after 12 games.

Former Spurs striker Allen told talkSPORT: “I’m very surprised. I was just very surprised at the timing. Obviously there has been the international break.

“I’m sure Spurs supporters will say the results have not been what they were expecting this season. I do believe there has been reasons why that has happened.

“I’m just really shocked and surprised. Where do Spurs go now?

“I think it puts them under even more pressure. Obviously they are very disappointed with their league position at the moment. They’ve got a massive game coming up against West Ham at the weekend.

“I’m just so surprised by the timing of it.

“I think the significant thing is their results and results over this last calendar year. That certainly indicates to me that’s one of the reasons they’ve made the decision they have.

“I think there’s no doubt the club have moved forward in terms of their structure and where they expecting to be, Champions League football is a must every season. Obviously there is question mark as to whether that is going to happen this season, so no doubt that is one of the factors.”

The quest will be on to find a new manager and Allen has picked out one name that stands out to him – Jose Mourinho.

talkSPORT understands the former Chelsea and Manchester United boss understands has already been sounded out about the job.

And Allen said: “I have no doubt that this decision has not been made hastily and there might be one or two suitors who they have in mind. One that comes to mind immediately is Jose Mourinho.

“Jose does it with his own individual style but he wins. That CV is hard to argue against.

“I think he will have to come in and know exactly what the brief is. Certainly that is the way Daniel runs the club. He will make him fully aware of that if it is to be Jose Mourinho.”

Danny Mills, the former England defender, also expects Mourinho to be the man who takes over at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.

“Mourinho is the obvious candidate,” he said. “They haven’t won anything for a long time and Mourinho is a winner. He would bring silverware.”
