PHOTOS: DNC Chair Harrison Hosts LGBTQ Community Listening Session in Florida

19 May
Today, Democratic National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison traveled to Florida to host a listening session with LGBTQ and youth leaders in Orlando. Chair Harrison was joined by partners from Equality Florida, the Florida LGBTQ+ Democratic Caucus, and local youth activists to discuss recent anti-LGBTQ legislation being pushed by Governor Ron DeSantis.

Please see below for photos from the event:
Building on the DNC’s 57-state-and-territory strategy, these events are the latest in Chair Harrison’s community engagements across the South this week, which includes stops in Little Rock, Arkansas; Orlando and Miami, Florida; and Robeson County, North Carolina with rural, LGBTQ, youth, Latino, Black, AAPI, and Native community members.

This community outreach comes as the DNC has committed more resources earlier than ever in a robust 57-state-and-territory strategy to invest in strong long-term party infrastructure. So far this cycle, the DNC has made almost $50 million in commitments and contributions to states for party-building and electoral programs. As part of this investment, the DNC and state parties last year announced a historic agreement to increase the DNC’s monthly State Party Partnership (SPP) funding by 25% and create a first-of-its-kind Red State Fund to invest in Democratic state parties’ efforts to sustain long-term programs in traditionally Republican states.

DNC Chair Harrison Holding Community Engagement Events Across the South

19 May

This week, Democratic National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison is traveling to states across the South to host community engagement events and promote how the Biden-Harris administration and Democrats have delivered for the American people while Republicans are focused only on pushing their extreme MAGA agenda.

Building on the DNC’s 57-state-and-territory strategy, Chair Harrison is hosting events in Little Rock, Arkansas; Orlando and Miami, Florida; and Robeson County, North Carolina. These events include roundtables with rural, LGBTQ, youth, Latino, Black, AAPI, and Native community members.

“While Republicans are playing defense on their ultra-MAGA agenda that could end the guarantee of Social Security and Medicare for millions of Americans, increase health care costs, and ban abortion with no exceptions for rape or incest, President Biden and Democrats are laser-focused on lowering costs for working families while reducing the deficit and protecting Americans’ fundamental rights,” said Democratic National Committee Chair Jaime Harrison. “As we head into a critical midterm election, it is more important than ever to engage with communities in all 57 states and territories, and these events will make sure that Americans know that the choice is clear between Democrats fighting for working people and Republicans fighting to see who can be the most MAGA.”

LOCAL HEADLINES: Biden Pushes to Lower Housing Costs

17 May

Yesterday, President Biden unveiled his Housing Supply Action Plan to help lower housing costs over time by boosting the supply of quality housing in communities across the country. President Biden’s plan involves creating and preserving hundreds of thousands of affordable housing units in the next three years to increase the amount of affordable housing available.

In addition to this plan, the Biden-Harris administration is taking  other actions to reduce costs for working families, including lowering health insurance premiums and working to lower the cost of prescription drugs. Meanwhile, Republicans don’t have a plan to tackle inflation, and instead are focused on pushing their ultra-MAGA agenda of raising taxes on half of Americans and sunsetting Medicare and Social Security.

Here’s a look at some of the local coverage of President Biden’s latest push to lower costs:

North Carolina: ABC 11: President Biden announces plan to ease burden of housing costs

“The Biden Administration announced a plan to ease the burden of housing costs. The administration said the goal is to close the housing supply gap over time. Some of the things the plan is designed to accomplish include closing America’s housing supply shortfall in five years.”

Ohio: The Columbus Dispatch: Affordable housing: Biden Administration offering cities incentives for zoning changes

“The Biden Administration wants cities across Ohio to build more affordable housing, and they’re willing to spend billions of dollars for it […] [HUD Secretary] Fudge’s announcement in Columbus was part of a larger rollout of President Joe Biden’s Housing Supply Action Plan, which aims to ‘ease the burden of housing costs over time, by boosting the supply of quality housing in every community.’”

Illinois: WCIA: Affordable housing plan aims to bring down high costs of living

“The government wants to help renters and homeowners with rising housing costs. The Biden administration announced a new affordable housing plan on Monday. Deputy National Economic Council Director Bharat Ramamurti says the focus is increasing the supply of available living spaces. ‘The way to bring costs down for families in a sustainable way is to make sure that there are more homes available,’ Ramamurti said.”

Missouri: KMMO: WHITE HOUSE REVEALS PLANS TO PROTECT AND EXPAND AFFORDABLE HOUSING AMID RISING INFLATION

“On Monday, the White House announced steps to increase and protect affordable housing nationwide by using federal funds as an incentive for reforms in a move to counter rising inflation. The White House plan will use funding from the bipartisan infrastructure law to control housing costs.”

South Dakota: KEVN: Biden-Harris Administration aiming to ease the burden of high housing costs

“The Biden-Harris Administration released a five-year comprehensive housing supply action plan designed to ease the burden of housing costs, a plan that could have a big impact in Rapid City. Under the new housing action plan, the administration addresses supply chain issues, housing affordability, and vows to work with private sectors to improve it.”

IN THE STATES: Americans Rally Against GOP’s Ultra MAGA Anti-Choice Agenda

16 May

This weekend, after a draft opinion from conservative Supreme Court justices revealed their intent to overturn Roe v. Wade, people across the country mobilized for “Bans Off Our Bodies” rallies and marches as part of a nationwide day of action calling out Republicans’ radical, anti-choice agenda and highlighting what’s at stake this November.

In states across the country, Republicans have shown they wouldn’t stop at Roe—GOP officials are now pushing for proposals that could jail doctors and threaten access to contraceptives. Senate Majority leader Mitch McConnell has even said a federal abortion ban is “possible” if Republicans take power. That’s why advocates, constituents, and Democratic leaders made their voices heard this weekend to rally against the GOP’s extreme agenda.

Here’s a look at what they’re reading in the states:

ICYMI: Local Officials Agree with President Biden: Fund Public Safety

16 May

On Friday, President Biden joined state and local officials from across the country to discuss how the Biden-Harris administration is getting local law enforcement the resources they need to help keep communities safe. This funding was made possible by the American Rescue Plan, which every single congressional Republican voted against. The president also used the meeting to urge local leaders to make more investments in public safety.

President Biden announced that $10 billion in American Rescue Plan funds have already been committed toward public safety – including at least $6.5 billion in state and local funds committed by more than half of states and more than 300 communities across the country. Along with ongoing state and local support from the Justice Department, American Rescue Plan investments made 2021 among the largest single-year commitments of federal resources for state and local law enforcement and public safety on record.

Here’s a look at what voters in the states are reading about President Biden’s commitment to public safety:

IN THE STATES: Dems Put GOP and Their Ultra-MAGA Agenda on Defense

13 May

In the states this week, Democratic state parties in the battlegrounds held press events as part of a press day of action highlighting what’s at stake this November as Republicans continue pushing their radical, anti-choice agenda. These events came a week after reports of SCOTUS’ draft decision overturning Roe v. Wade, and days after Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell confirmed a GOP majority could focus on a federal abortion ban.

Here’s a look at some of the coverage of the events:

And across the country, while Democrats took aim at the GOP’s extreme agenda to restrict reproductive rights, Republicans talked about the possibility of moving on a federal abortion ban.

Also this week, as new polling shows the GOP plan that could sunset Medicare and Social Security after 5 years is “universally unpopular,” the DNC launched new ads targeting seniors on Facebook to make sure they know that Republicans could put their hard-earned benefits at risk.

As the latest step in the Biden-Harris administration’s laser-focus on lowering costs for Americans, President Biden and Vice President Harris announced new steps this week to reduce high-speed internet costs for millions of Americans.

New DNC Ads Highlight GOP Putting Seniors’ Medicare and Social Security at Risk

12 May

This morning, as new polling shows the GOP plan that could sunset Medicare and Social Security after 5 years is “universally unpopular,” the DNC launched new ads targeting seniors on Facebook to make sure they know that Republicans could put their hard-earned benefits at risk.

The ads come as part of a push by the DNC to communicate directly with voters about Republicans’ plan that could raise taxes and sunset Medicare and Social Security. Since NRSC Chair Rick Scott announced the plan in March, the DNC and state Democratic parties have held events blasting the plan in swing states, including WisconsinPennsylvaniaMichiganNorth CarolinaFlorida, and Georgia, launched a digital ad buy in key states highlighting how the plan could raise taxes, and bracketed an event where Scott was promoting the plan.

Here’s what they’re saying about the new ads:

National: Roll Call: New senior-focused ads from Democrats hit Scott’s plans for Medicare, Social Security

“Democrats are launching an ad campaign targeting seniors to highlight Republican Sen. Rick Scott’s push to have Congress to reauthorize legislation every five years. The proposal in the 11-point plan from Scott, a Florida Republican and chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, is the focus of Facebook ads funded by the Democratic National Committee aimed at seniors in Senate battleground states. The ads feature questions from a Fox News Channel anchor about whether Scott’s plan would ‘sunset’ Social Security and Medicare, or require Congress to vote periodically to keep the programs running.”

Wisconsin: Up North News: Not Letting It Go: National Democrats to Keep Hitting Ron Johnson on GOP Plan to Raise Taxes

“In a new ad that started running on Facebook Thursday morning, the Democratic National Committee (DNC) uses the words of Fox News Sunday anchor John Roberts as he interviews Sen. Rick Scott, the Florida head of the Senate Republicans’ campaign committee and author of the plan. Scott is seen as Roberts recites the plan back to him, but never heard.”

Florida: Florida Politics: Democrats bet seniors won’t like Rick Scott plan to ‘rescue America’

“‘Florida seniors depend on the Medicare and Social Security benefits they’ve been paying into for decades to access life-saving care and afford basic necessities — and Republicans are putting their right to these hard-earned benefits in jeopardy. Without these crucial programs, more than 4.6 million Floridians could stand to face higher costs, and Democrats are committed to spending every day between now and November making sure that voters know it,’ said DNC States Communications Director Brooke Goren.”

Pennsylvania: Pennsylvania Capital-Star: New Dem ad in Pa. hits GOP plan to sunset Medicare, Social Security

“A new Democratic National Committee ad, launching today in Pennsylvania and seven other, key battleground states, keeps up that drumbeat of criticism, warning a critical audience — seniors on Facebook — that their ‘hard-earned benefits’ are under attack by the GOP.”

Georgia: Atlanta Journal Constitution: The Jolt

“The Democratic National Committee launched an ad buy Thursday that targets older Georgia residents with messages attacking Florida Republican Sen. Rick Scott’s tax plan. The ad, which will run on Facebook, highlights concerns that the proposal would raise the federal income tax for about half of U.S. residents.”

New DNC Ads Kick Off Campaign to Highlight GOP Plan that Could Put Medicare and Social Security at Risk

12 May

New polling shows voters “overwhelmingly reject” the Republican plan that could sunset Medicare and Social Security

As new polling shows the GOP plan that could sunset Medicare and Social Security after 5 years is “universally unpopular,” the DNC is launching a new ad buy targeting seniors on Facebook to make sure they know that Republicans could put their hard-earned benefits at risk. The ads will run in New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, Georgia, Florida, Wisconsin, Nevada, and Arizona.

The ads come as part of a push by the DNC to communicate directly with voters about Republicans’ plan that could raise taxes and sunset Medicare and Social Security. Since NRSC Chair Rick Scott announced the plan in March, the DNC and state Democratic parties have held events blasting the plan in swing states, including WisconsinPennsylvaniaMichiganNorth CarolinaFlorida, and Georgia, launched a digital ad buy in key states highlighting how the plan could raise taxes ahead of Tax Day, and bracketed an event where Scott was promoting the plan.

See below for the ad:

“Seniors across America depend on the Medicare and Social Security benefits they’ve been paying into for decades to access life-saving care and cover everyday expenses – and Republicans are putting their right to these hard-earned benefits in jeopardy,” said DNC States Communications Director Brooke Goren. “Americans can’t afford the Republican agenda, and the DNC is committed to spending every day between now and November making sure that voters know it.

More than 61 million Americans depend on Medicare for their health coverage, and nearly 70 million Americans rely on their Social Security benefits for everything from groceries to rent – and without these programs they’d see their out-of-pocket costs on health care and daily expenses go up. While Republicans are threatening these hard-earned benefits, President Biden and Democrats have proposed measures to bolster Social Security and responsibly reduce the deficit without touching Medicare or Social Security by making billionaires pay their fair share in taxes – while also lowering costs for working families.

Ad transcript:

VO1: Florida Republican Senator Rick Scott just released an 11-point plan to “rescue America.”

VO2: So that would raise taxes on half of Americans and potentially sunset programs like Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. Why would you propose something like that in an election year?

VO2: It’s not a Democratic talking point, it’s in the plan.
