Pelosi Has Meltdown When Pressed About Why She Is Blocking COVID-19 Relief

14 Oct

In a sign of how untenable Speaker Pelosi’s position to continue blocking COVID-19 relief is, even CNN pressed her during an interview yesterday about why she is refusing to make a deal. In response to questions from Wolf Blitzer, she had a meltdown and claimed that the host was amplifying Republican talking points, even though he was simply asking why she doesn’t take the advice of her fellow Democrats and come to an agreement:

See more on the reaction to the Speaker’s disastrous interview below:

  • Fox News: “Pelosi lashes out at CNN’s Wolf Blitzer as GOP ‘apologist’ during testy exchange on stalled COVID stimulus”
  • The Washington Examiner: “Pelosi bristles at Wolf Blitzer for bringing up Democratic demands for her to take deal on pandemic relief”
  • The New York Post: “Nancy Pelosi calls Wolf Blitzer a GOP ‘apologist’ during epic on-air spat”
  • The Daily Caller: “Pelosi Calls CNN ‘Apologists’ For Republicans In Heated Interview With Wolf Blitzer”
  • The Daily Wire: “WATCH: Pelosi Comes Unglued When CNN Presses Her On Stimulus Bill”
  • Breitbart: “House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, CNN’s Wolf Blitzer Clash over Coronavirus Relief — ‘You Really Don’t Know What You’re Talking About’”
  • The Blaze: “VIDEO: Nancy Pelosi melts down on CNN, accuses Wolf Blitzer of being an ‘apologist’ for the Republicans”
  • Townhall: “Why Nancy Pelosi Labeled Wolf Blitzer and the MSM as ‘Apologists’ for the GOP”
  • The Daily Mail: “Nancy Pelosi spectacularly unravels during CNN interview after being asked WHY she is holding up Trump’s $1.8T COVID relief bill – after Dem allies told the isolated Speaker to accept it”
  • The Federalist: “Pelosi Accuses CNN’s Wolf Blitzer Of Being A GOP ‘Apologist’ For Asking Why Democrats Won’t Say Yes To Trillions More Deficit Spending”

Instead of criticizing the media for asking questions, the Speaker owes the country answers about why she continues to put her party’s political agenda before the best interest of the American people by holding commonsense relief legislation hostage in exchange for her partisan wishlist.

Democrats Mislead The Public On COVID Relief Legislation

13 Oct

In another untrue claim, a number of Democratic members on the Judiciary Committee, including Senator Leahy and Senator Harris, said that yesterday’s hearing should not be held and argued that the Senate should be focused on passing COVID-19 relief legislation instead.

However, it is Speaker Pelosi and Senate Democrats who are responsible for not allowing an assistance package to pass. Just last month, under the Speaker’s orders, Senate Democrats filibustered a relief bill that would have provided key aid to Americans:

  • Politico, 9/10/20: “Senate Democrats block Republican Covid-19 relief proposal”
  • NPR, 9/10/20: “Senate Democrats Block GOP’s $300 Billion Pandemic Relief Bill”
  • Fox News, 9/10/20: “McConnell accuses Dems of wanting to block relief until after election: ‘Their goal is clear'”

After Democrats said during yesterday’s hearing that they wanted to work on COVID-19 relief and blamed Republicans for the fact that it had not passed, Senator Mike Crapo set the record straight and explained how they were deliberately misleading the public on this issue:

SEN. MIKE CRAPO: So then the attack is, ‘well, the Republicans don’t care about people’s health, they won’t even try to get COVID relief out. We’re here in a hearing in the Judiciary Committee when we ought to be passing COVID relief legislation.’ I’ve heard several of my colleagues basically say, “the Republicans are refusing to work on helping to address the COVID crisis.’

This coming from colleagues who, just a month or so ago, voted unanimously to filibuster a 500 to 600 billion dollar COVID relief package in the Senate. A COVID relief  package — I asked my staff to get me a quick summary of it, that put, as I indicated, somewhere between 500 and 600 billion dollars into more small business loans, unemployment insurance, agriculture and farming assistance, postal service assistance, education assistance, both at the higher level education levels and at K-12,  health care assistance for a pandemic preparation for strategic stockpiles for testing, for contact tracing, billions for vaccine and therapeutic and diagnostic development, and the list goes on. We were stopped from proceeding with this legislation by a filibuster of those who now accuse us of not wanting to try to do something. We stand ready if you’ll simply let us go to the legislation and pass it.

Speaker Pelosi Refuses To Say “Yes” To COVID-19 Relief & Will Not Do Anything To Help Small Businesses

12 Oct

Speaker Pelosi continues to be unserious about passing a bipartisan COVID-19 relief deal, making clear this weekend that she will say no to any proposal that does not include her partisan wishlist items.

At the same time, her party is still refusing to take action to help employees whose jobs may be in jeopardy and small businesses that need additional assistance through the Paycheck Protection Program. Yesterday, White House Chief of Staff Mark Meadows and Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin sent a letter to members of the Congress urging both the House and Senate to, “immediately vote on a bill to allow us to spend the unused Paycheck Protection Program funds while we continue to work toward a comprehensive package”:

As a reminder, Republicans have tried a number of ways to pass legislation that would allow the ~$135B in unspent PPP funds to be repurposed so it can help small businesses. On three separate occasions, Democrats have obstructed Republican efforts to bring up Rep. Steve Chabot’s legislation (H.R. 8265) that would extend this program by rejecting the previous question four times, choosing not to sign a discharge petition for the bill, and blocking 35 separate unanimous consent requests that would have brought the bill to the floor:

  • On September 25, Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler formally offered a petition to discharge this bill to the floor for a vote. To date, no Democrats have signed it.
  • On October 1, 35 House Republicans made individual unanimous consent requests to bring this legislation to the floor. The Democrat majority rejected each one of those requests.

The fact that Democrats are using assistance for small businesses and employees as leverage to extract their far-left demands shows that they are content putting their political agenda before the best interest of the American people. They cannot be trusted to govern responsibly and their refusal to immediately pass commonsense legislation that would allow unspent PPP funds to help workers is proof of that.

Pelosi Launches New Effort To Undermine President Trump Politically

9 Oct

Instead of trying to get something done for Americans who are struggling or bringing the House back into session to pass commonsense bills providing relief for the airline industry or extending the PPP, Speaker Pelosi is choosing to prioritize her political interests today.

At a press conference this morning with Rep. Jamie Raskin – who said even before the President was sworn into office that he wanted to impeach him regardless of the facts – the Speaker will introduce a “largely symbolic” bill that attempts to question the president’s fitness for office.

This is not a serious legislative endeavor and is an attempt by Speaker Pelosi to use her official office to undermine President Trump politically. She has done this repeatedly before, whether it was during the Russia investigation or her partisan impeachment effort, and it proves once again that she is more interested in advancing Democrats’ partisan agenda than she is on governing this nation responsibly.

This morning’s New York Post highlighted the true motivations behind the Speaker’s press conference:

The New York Post (Editorial): “Nancy Pelosi’s latest coup-coup nonsense”

  • “Pelosi’s noise follows a host of forlorn Democratic get-Trump plans, which hit their apex with her ramshackle impeachment show early this year — even as the coronavirus was quietly hitting these shores.”

Speaker Pelosi Continues To Hold Critical Relief Hostage

9 Oct

At a press conference yesterday, Speaker Pelosi ruled out passing COVID-19 relief legislation in targeted areas where there is bipartisan agreement that assistance is needed, saying she would not bring that legislation to the floor unless it is part of a bigger bill that includes her far-left priorities:

  • Axios: “Pelosi rules out standalone airline bill without comprehensive relief package”

Over the last five months, the Speaker has refused to operate in good-faith and has held commonsense relief that both parties agree the country needs hostage to her political demands.

Congress could pass bipartisan legislation tomorrow that provides payroll support to protect jobs for air carrier workers (H.R. 8345), and could also pass a bill extending the Paycheck Protection Program in a way that would support small businesses and employees whose jobs are in jeopardy (H.R. 8265). House Republicans even have a discharge petition for the bill to extend the PPP that House Democrats could sign which would circumvent Speaker Pelosi’s authority and bring the bill to the floor for immediate consideration. On three separate occasions, Democrats have obstructed Republican efforts to bring this legislation up by rejecting the previous question four times, choosing not to sign a discharge petition for the bill, and blocking 35 separate unanimous consent requests that would have brought the bill to the floor:

  • On September 25, Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler formally offered a petition to discharge this bill to the floor for a vote. To date, no Democrats have signed it.
  • On October 1, 35 House Republicans made individual unanimous consent requests to bring this legislation to the floor. The Democrat majority rejected each one of those requests.

It’s clear this is about political posturing on the part of Speaker Pelosi, and she refuses to check her partisan interests at the door and work in a good faith manner to pass reasonable legislation that would provide critical assistance to the American people.

Democrats Still Blocking PPP Extension Even As New Study Shows The Success Of The Program

7 Oct

While the Speaker is rejecting a reasonable deal that would allow COVID-19 relief to pass, Democrats could easily join Republicans to bring legislation to the floor that would allow small businesses to access unspent funds in the Paycheck Protection Program to support employees whose jobs are in jeopardy.

Rep. Jaime Herrera Beutler’s petition discharging Rep. Steve Chabot’s bill has 185 signatures. If the petition receives 218 signatures, it will circumvent Speaker Pelosi’s control of the floor and allow the House to pass this legislation. Democrats have a choice: will they continue to support the Speaker’s efforts to obstruct this important assistance for political reasons, or will they sign this discharge petition to bring common sense legislation to the floor that will give small businesses the chance to keep their employees on their payroll by receiving another PPP loan with the funds that remain in the program?

Last night, President Trump called on Congress to immediately approve legislation that would extend the PPP:

Democrats have no reason to oppose extending this program, especially given a new study showing how critical it has been to supporting workers across the country. As Republicans on the House Ways & Means Committee detailed yesterday, the PPP led to increased employment and financial wellbeing and stopped the foreclosure of Main Street businesses across the country. See below for key takeaways from this new report courtesy of Glenn Hubbard and Michael R. Strain:

Key Points:

  • PPP was “the most ambitious” fiscal policy response to the COVID-19 crisis.
  • Smaller businesses got the most utility out of PPP loans.
  • PPP loans increased employment and financial well-being – especially for Main Street businesses.
  • Over 4.9 million PPP loans were processed, supporting over 51 million jobs.
  • Democrats currently are blocking Republican efforts to allow more businesses to tap unused PPP funds.

Read the full report below, which explains why Speaker Pelosi and Democrats’ decision to block an extension of this program is hurting small businesses and employees that need support:
