NEW DNC DIGITAL AD: ‘Trump’s Hurricane Maria Response Failed Puerto Ricans’

22 Sep

The DNC War Room today released a new digital ad that blasts Trump for failing to provide Puerto Ricans the assistance they needed in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria. The ad, titled “Trump’s Hurricane Maria Response Failed Puerto Ricans,” will run on Facebook in Florida in the Orlando and Kissimmee areas.

“Trump’s response to Hurricane Maria was a disaster. He failed to provide the necessary support for Americans in need, and when pressed on it, lied and misled the public about his record. It’s simple: Trump failed Puerto Ricans,” said DNC War Room senior spokesperson and advisor Lily Adams. “Thousands of Puerto Ricans are still suffering because Trump turned his back on them, and we’re going to hold him accountable for it.”

MEMO: 200,000 COVID-19 Deaths and the impact of Trump’s Presidency on Latino Americans

22 Sep

MEMORANDUM

TO: Interested Parties

FROM: DNC Press Office

DATE: Monday, September 21, 2020

RE: 200,000 COVID-19 Deaths and the impact of Trump’s Presidency on Latino Americans

The United States is about to surpass 200,000 COVID-19 death toll. Unfortunately, nearly 200,000 of our fellow Americans are gone because of this president’s failure to lead.

Latino communities have been among the hardest hit by this crisis and Trump’s incompetent response. As a significant portion of the essential workforce, Latinos have been dramatically exposed to this deadly virus as data reveals that of the nearly 200,000 coronavirus deaths, more than 38,470 are Latinos.

Donald Trump’s failure to contain the pandemic has had major consequences for the community’s most vulnerable population, those 65 and older. For some context, the CDC data tells us that the majority of deaths, 78 percent, are people over age 65. In the case of Latinos, they only represent 8.4% of the population over 65; but they account for 20.8% of all COVID deaths.

Donald Trump knew that COVID was dangerous and harmful to young people, yet publicly he told the American people they were “almost immune.” We now know that younger Latinos are more likely to die at a younger age than their white contemporaries from Covid-19 as data tells us that Latino children represent 45 percent of all 121 Covid-19 deaths of those under the age of 21, and 18 percent of the deaths occured in those under the age of 55.

The deaths of thousands of young and older Latinos in the U.S. during this pandemic can only be summed up by the words of Arizonan Kristin Urquiza, who lost her father to the coronavirus in June, as she said “Donald Trump may not have caused the coronavirus, but his dishonesty and his irresponsible actions made it so much worse.”

Trump’s botched response to COVID not only cost an untold number of lives, he has driven our economy into a recession. Trump’s mismanagement of the coronavirus has cost over 13 million Americans their jobs and forced more than 100,000 small businesses to close for good. The economic impact continues to disproportionately affect people of color as unemployment for Latinos sits at 10.5%. Worst of all, Trump and his Republican enablers in Congress are blocking real relief for hard working Latino workers. Instead of taking bold action, Senate Republicans voted on a bill that doesn’t do enough to fight the  virus, abandons state and local governments struggling with the fallout from the pandemic, and ignores families facing hunger and homelessness.

Despite these staggering figures, the president refuses to acknowledge the severity of the devastation — telling undecided voters in an ABC News town hall last week that “I think we did a great job” with the pandemic response and that he had no regrets. The pandemic has proved to be the worst health crisis in modern history, and the inadequate response by Donald Trump and his failed administration has resulted in substantial health and economic ramifications that have crashed particularly hard on the Latino communities.

Latinos made more gains than any other ethnic group under the ACA, but Trump’s lawsuit seeking to overturn the law risks kicking millions off of their health care and ending protections for those with preexisting conditions.

  •  Trump’s health care sabotage jeopardizes significant gains among Hispanic communities.
  • Trump proposed massive cuts to Medicaid, which provides health coverage for about 32% of non-elderly Hispanics.
  • The ACA has been a lifeline during the pandemic, and many coronavirus patients experience long-term complications that could qualify as pre-existing conditions and lead to denied coverage if Trump’s lawsuit succeeds.

Trump has failed to look out for the economic wellbeing of Latino Americans. Instead of bringing wage growth and job creation to Latino communities, Trump has made it harder for Latinos to succeed.

  • Latinx-owned businesses suffered as the Trump administration botched the delivery of assistance to minority-owned small businesses hurt by the coronavirus.
  • As Trump failed to mount a serious response to the coronavirus, unemployment has been particularly high for Latino workers and business owners. As of August, Latino unemployment remains in double-digits at 10.5%.
  • According to NBC News, at least 72 percent of Latino households are facing serious financial problems, including pay cuts, lack of savings and difficulties affording food and rent.
  • Latinos were disproportionately left out on the benefits from Trump’s tax law, and most will actually face higher taxes by 2027.
  • Trump’s budgets sought to slash funding for SNAP benefits, which help about 10 million Latinos and lifted nearly 2.5 million Latinos out of poverty in 2015 alone.
  • Trump’s decision to rescind DACA and eliminate protections for TPS recipients could devastate Latino communities and the entire U.S. economy.

NEW DNC VIDEO: ‘Trump Failed Puerto Rico’

21 Sep

The DNC War Room today released a new video, “Trump Failed Puerto Rico,” to highlight how, three years ago in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria, Trump turned his back on Puerto Rico.

“Three years ago, thousands of Americans in Puerto Rico lost their lives as a result of Hurricane Maria. And when they turned to Trump for support, he turned his back on them,” said DNC War Room senior spokesperson and advisor Lily Adams. “To this day, Puerto Ricans are suffering as a direct result of Trump’s disastrous response. But instead of working to help Puerto Rico rebuild, Trump has lied and attempted to mislead the public on his failed response. The truth is Trump failed Puerto Ricans, and he’ll be held accountable for it.”

DNC on the Passing of Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg

19 Sep

DNC Chair Tom Perez released the following statement on the passing of U.S. Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg:

“Five years ago, Ruth Bader Ginsburg was asked in an interview, ‘When the time comes, what would you like to be remembered for?’ She replied, ‘Someone who used whatever talent she had to do her work to the very best of her ability, and to help repair tears in her society.’ Throughout her extraordinary career, Ruth Bader Ginsburg did her very best to repair the tears in our society. She was a brilliant jurist, a fearless champion for justice, a trailblazer for countless women and girls, and a tireless advocate for the rights of those on society’s margins. With a sharp mind and even sharper wit, Justice Ginsburg changed our court and our country for the better. The Supreme Court has lost a giant today, and America has lost a hero. May her memory be a blessing, and may her family find solace in the prayers of a grateful nation.

“As we mourn this tragic loss, we also recognize the gravity of Justice Ginsburg’s position. There is now a vacancy at the U.S. Supreme Court, and it should be filled with a justice who embodies the same integrity, courage, and commitment to equality that Justice Ginsburg showed on the bench and throughout her life. As was Justice Ginsburg’s final wish, the American people deserve a voice in this decision. And they will make their voices heard in November.”

DNC on Trump’s Puerto Rico Announcement: More Empty Promises

18 Sep

In response to the Trump administration’s politically motivated announcement regarding Puerto Rico, DNC Chair Tom Perez released the following statement:

“Donald Trump has consistently treated Puerto Ricans as second-class citizens. His administration failed Puerto Rico when Hurricane Maria made landfall and the people desperately needed help, and throughout the recovery process. I visited the island after Maria to bring supplies to those in need. And I witnessed the worst devastation I’ve seen in my life. But instead of showing leadership, Trump abandoned our fellow Americans when they needed us most. At every step, Trump has chosen to attack Puerto Rico and to disrespect the memory of the thousands who died because of his negligence. His administration has knowingly ignored laws and consistently treated Puerto Rico as a bargaining chip.

“Puerto Ricans will not be fooled by his empty promises — the deaths, the suffering, and the struggles Puerto Ricans still face are a constant reminder that Trump talks plenty but does very little. Joe Biden and Kamala Harris have a comprehensive plan to help Puerto Rico rebuild and begin a new era of hope and prosperity; they will invest in recovery, not play games with disaster aid; they will provide more nutritional assistance and Medicaid funding, not slash them; and and they will treat Puerto Ricans with the dignity and respect they deserve.”

When Hurricane Maria hit, FEMA was unprepared and the administration showed a clear double standard in how it treated hurricane relief efforts in Puerto Rico versus other states.

  • FEMA was unprepared for Hurricane Maria hitting Puerto Rico and did not follow federal requirements to adequately prepare enough supplies before the storm.

  • The Trump administration held a persistent double standard in its handling of relief efforts for Hurricane Harvey in Texas and Hurricane Maria in Puerto Rico.

After Hurricane Maria hit, Trump blamed Puerto Ricans and opposed providing the aid needed. Trump said he did a great job in relief, yet, as thousands died, he was preoccupied asking about selling Puerto Rico.

  • Trump placed blame on Puerto Ricans in the wake of Hurricane Maria’s devastation and opposed providing the aid they needed to recover.

  • An estimated 4,645 Puerto Ricans died because of Hurricane Maria and its effects, however, Trump gave himself “a 10” for his overall response.

  • In the aftermath of Hurricane Maria, Trump reportedly asked whether he could “sell” or “divest” from Puerto Rico.

In the years since, the Trump administration has knowingly ignored laws and stalled assistance, has refused to provide congressionally allocated assistance, and has slashed Medicaid funding for the island. All of this, while tens of thousands live under tarps.

  • The Trump administration knowingly ignored laws and and have further stalled congressionally mandated aid to Puerto Rico.

  • Trump’s reckless government shutdown over his border wall delayed the distribution of hurricane recovery aid for Puerto Rico.

  • Last year, Trump slashed Medicaid funding for Puerto Rico as part of his budget negotiations.

  • On the third anniversary of Hurricane Maria’s landfall, tens of thousands of homes in Puerto Rico continue to be uninhabitable, with many still living with tarps for roofs.

Napolitano and Perez Slam Trump for Failing to Keep Americans Safe

1 Sep

During a DNC War Room press call today, former Arizona Governor and Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano and DNC Chair Tom Perez discussed Trump’s visit to Wisconsin and how Trump has made America less safe by ignoring the deadly COVID crisis, encouraging chaos, and fanning the flames of hate and division.

Former Secretary of Homeland Security Janet Napolitano:

“This is Donald Trump’s America. He is the incumbent president, and under his failed leadership, what we have seen is really a demise in public safety at its most basic level. We’ve seen a pandemic get out of control at the cost of over 180,000 American lives. Over 6 million already diagnosed with the COVID-19 virus, and he still has no plan, no plan for public health and public safety. How, as a country, are we going to deal with this pandemic under Donald Trump? Vice President Biden and Kamala Harris have a plan. It is a thoughtful, executable plan that will lead to success against this pandemic. And under President Trump, there is no plan.

“There is no plan for how to deal with the issues of structural racism that we have seen erupt around the country — in the wake of the Floyd murder in Minneapolis and continued with the issues around the Blake shooting in Kenosha. He has no way to help communities heal, to raise and discuss in a way that brings people to the table, brings people together so that we can hash out the issues. Vice President Biden has a history of doing just that.”

“We can be a country that comes together, that grapples with our fundamental issues, that deals with public health crises like the pandemic in a reasoned and thoughtful way. Or we can continue to be a country divided, a country that is riven with a virus, a country that is unsafe. I think the choice is clear, I think the choice clearly is to elect Vice President Biden and Kamala Harris to lead our country. And really as a former governor myself and former Secretary of Homeland Security, I just can’t be critical enough of how President Trump has handled these matters.”

DNC Chair Tom Perez:

“The first priority of every president is to keep the American people safe. And Donald Trump has failed this fundamental duty spectacularly. The United States just passed 6 million COVID-19 cases. Over 183,000 Americans have died from this pandemic. And yet there is still no plan from this president. Millions have lost their jobs and their savings. Our economy is in the worst recession since the Great Depression.”

“Donald Trump hasn’t even bothered to change his tee time. And when he isn’t lining up his next putt, he’s been fanning the flames of division. Just yesterday, in fact, Donald Trump defended one of his own supporters who has been charged with murdering two people in Wisconsin — just as he has defended white nationalists in Charlottesville, VA. This president has stooped so low he’s staring up at rock bottom.”

“At a time when we desperately need a leader who can bring us together, Donald Trump continues to do nothing but sow division. He advocated violence against peaceful protestors, rather than condemning the racial violence that launched these protests in the first place. I may not work at DOJ anymore, but I didn’t spend most of my career prosecuting injustice only to see a demagogue cheer it on from the White House.”

New Poll Shows Most Americans Think Trump Made The Pandemic Worse As New Documents Reveal Why

1 Sep

A new poll shows that most Americans think Trump’s coronavirus response has made the pandemic worse. They’re right. Trump left states to go at it alone in obtaining critical supplies, he continues to risk a worse recession, and new documents show he downplayed the virus even as his own task force issued increasingly dire reports.

A new poll shows that most Americans think Trump’s coronavirus response has made the pandemic worse.

Axios: “Most Americans think the federal government is making the coronavirus pandemic worse, according to the latest installment of the Axios-Ipsos Coronavirus Index…This is a pretty searing indictment of the federal response — not only that it has not helped, but that it’s part of the problem.”

New documents reveal that as Trump pushed states to lift restrictions his task force was giving him increasingly dire reports.

CNN: “As President Donald Trump was painting a positive picture of the coronavirus pandemic and urging states to reopen the nation’s businesses and schools, data from the White House coronavirus task force released Monday shows he was getting increasingly dire reports about the spread of the pandemic in July and August.”

The reports show Mike Pence declared that there was no second wave as the task force he runs privately warned states that their cases were spiking.

Axios: “In a June 23 report, the White House coronavirus task force privately warned seven states that they remained in the ‘red zone,’ indicating the highest risk of coronavirus spread. But just a week earlier, on June 16, Pence claimed in a Wall Street Journal op-ed that the ‘panic’ over a possible second wave of COVID-19 cases was ‘overblown.’”

Trump sowed chaos by leaving states to go it alone in obtaining critical PPE and medical equipment supplies, which still hasn’t abated.

Wall Street Journal: “How Trump Sowed Covid Supply Chaos. ‘Try Getting It Yourselves.’”

Wall Street Journal: “A landmark White House move left states to secure medical equipment themselves, causing problems that still haven’t abated”

Trump’s failure to provide additional coronavirus relief could cause a new wave of small business closures and prolong the recession.

New York Times: “The United States faces a wave of small-business failures this fall if the federal government does not provide a new round of financial assistance — a prospect that economists warn would prolong the recession, slow the recovery and perhaps enduringly reshape the American business landscape.”

NEW DNC AD: ‘Trump’s America’

1 Sep

Ahead of Trump’s visit to Wisconsin today, the DNC War Room is releasing a new television ad, “Trump’s America,” blasting Trump for making America less safe by failing to combat the coronavirus, encouraging chaos, and inciting violence. “Trump’s America” will air on D.C. cable and on TV in Wisconsin and other battleground states.

“Trump has made our country less safe and now he denies responsibility for the chaos happening under his watch? It’s unhinged,” said DNC War Room senior spokesperson and advisor Lily Adams. “Trump will do anything to distract from the fact that over 180,000 Americans have lost their lives and millions are without jobs because of his disastrous coronavirus response. As Trump tries to divide Americans, Democrats will keep talking to voters about Joe Biden and Kamala Harris’ vision to bring this country together and tackle the issues facing our nation.”
