DNC on Latest Unemployment Numbers

13 Aug

DNC Chair and former labor secretary Tom Perez released the following statement after nearly 1 million more Americans filed initial claims for unemployment last week:

“Nearly 1 million new unemployment claims last week. Nearly 30 million Americans out of work. Over 166,000 deaths. And what is this president’s response? To cut benefits and attack critical programs like Social Security.

“The American people are sick and tired of Donald Trump’s incompetence. They are fed up with his failures. And they are ready for a new era of leadership. Joe Biden and Kamala Harris will usher in that new era by ending this pandemic and building back better.”

DNC on Pence Visiting Iowa as State Crosses 50,000 COVID Cases

13 Aug

DNC Spokeswoman Maddie McComb released the following statement on Pence visiting Iowa as the state hits 50,000 cases:

“It didn’t have to be this bad, but Mike Pence and Donald Trump’s failure to prepare or contain the coronavirus has now led to more than 50,000 positive cases in Iowa alone. As Pence heads to the Hawkeye state for a political photo op, Iowans are still dealing with the aftermath of devastating flooding, a chaotic trade war that Trump lost, and massive unemployment across the state. Pence should stop the political games, head back to Washington, and work on the coronavirus task force he was charged with leading. Iowans deserve more than the failed leadership they’re currently seeing from the Trump White House.”

DNC on Trump Admitting to Sabotaging the Post Office to Boost his Reelection

13 Aug

In response to Trump admitting that he is withholding money from the U.S. Post Office to try to stop mail-in voting, DNC senior spokesperson and adviser Lily Adams released the following statement:

“Donald Trump admitted that he is deliberately sabotaging the Post Office because he thinks it will help boost his reelection. Trump is taking money the Post Office needs and holding up coronavirus relief for millions of struggling Americans and small businesses because he wants to try to stop more voters from voting safely in a pandemic.

“It’s simple – he is terrified of being held accountable. Trump knows Americans are sick of his chaos and incompetence that has contributed to more than 166,000 deaths, over 5 million coronavirus cases, and the sharpest economic decline on record.”

NEW DNC VIDEO: Trump Puts Children in Danger by Ignoring the Facts on COVID

12 Aug

As coronavirus cases in children spike across the country, Trump still has not listened to medical experts or ensured students, teachers, and families will be safe as he pushes for schools to restart in-person classes. He continues to claim that children are “immune” and that the virus will “disappear.” And today at the White House, he’s expected to continue this push, even as experts and parents worry about the potentially deadly consequences.

In response, the DNC War Room is releasing a new video, “Trump Should Know Better,” blasting Trump for ignoring the facts and needlessly putting children in danger as he continues with his disastrous coronavirus response.

“Parents and teachers don’t trust Donald Trump to make the right call on schools when he’s ignored the science and rejected experts,” said DNC War Room senior spokesperson and advisor Lily Adams. “Even after more than 160,000 Americans have died and millions have lost their jobs, Trump continues to follow his failed playbook: lie and downplay the threat of the virus and make decisions based on what he thinks will benefit him politically. As a result, American families continue to weather chaos as Trump prolongs this crisis.”

DNC Statement on Trump Campaign’s South Carolina Fundraiser

12 Aug

Ahead of the Trump campaign’s fundraiser in Lake Keowee, South Carolina today, Democratic National Committee spokesperson John Weber released the following statement:

“South Carolinians don’t need the Trumps parachuting in for a high-d0llar fundraiser. They need tests, personal protective equipment, and a president with the capacity to lead. But nearly seven months after Donald Trump promised that the virus was ‘totally under control,’ the pandemic is still getting worse every day. South Carolina can’t afford four more years of his incompetence and broken promises.”

BACKGROUND ON TRUMP’S FAILED PANDEMIC RESPONSE

COVID-19 Cases in Children Spike As Trump Holds WH Event Pushing Potentially Unsafe School Reopenings

12 Aug

Across the country, reports of child cases of coronavirus are spiking, yet Trump remains focused on getting children back to school as soon as possible, even if doing so is potentially unsafe. At a White House event today, he’s expected to do more of the same — lie and downplay the threat of the coronavirus while pushing for students, their families, and school workers to be put in danger.

Trump has repeatedly said that children are “almost immune” to the coronavirus, but new reports show an alarming increase in coronavirus cases among children — disproportionately impacting Black and Hispanic children.

CBS News: “There has been a dramatic increase in coronavirus cases among children in the United States, according to a report from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP). The association noted a 90% increase in pediatric cases over four weeks. From July 9 to August 6, confirmed cases of COVID-19 in children across the country went from 200,184 to 380,174 – an increase of 179,990 new cases, according to the pediatrics group. During the last two weeks of July alone, more than 97,000 children tested positive for the coronavirus, according to the AAP.”

CNN: “Black and Hispanic children are impacted more severely by coronavirus, with higher case rates, hospitalizations and virus-related complications, according to research released this week. These findings mirror similar reports across the nation of adults in minority communities being hit harder by Covid-19. … The report found Hispanic children were hospitalized for coronavirus at the highest rate, 16.4 per 100,000 people, followed by Black children at 10.5 per 100,000. In contrast, White children were hospitalized at a rate of 2.1 per 100,000.”

Children in states across the country are contracting coronavirus, yet Trump continues to push for schools to reopen even if doing so would risk the health of students, their teachers, and their families.

Georgia — BuzzFeed News: “A Georgia School District Has To Quarantine More Than 900 People Over Fears Of Coronavirus Exposure”

California — Fox News: “Coronavirus cases in children spike in California, according to reports”

Kentucky — Lexington Herald-Leader: “After Kentucky allowed regulated child care providers to reopen in June following a three-month shutdown, reports of COVID-19 infections among employees and children began to trickle in, according to state data. Two months later, new reports arrive on a daily basis. On Monday, Gov. Andy Beshear said 123 child care facilities have disclosed infections for 96 staff members and 82 children.”

Massachusetts — Worcester Telegram & Gazette: “As school districts around Massachusetts decide on how they plan to reopen this fall, the number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 continues to increase and the number of unknowns surrounding children and the disease remain. … Since the pandemic began, more than 394 Worcester residents 18 younger have tested positive for coronavirus, according to a spokesman for the city, while 17 have required hospitalization.”

Ohio — News 5 Cleveland: “Medical experts in Northeast Ohio and across the state have issued a warning and are giving advice to parents concerning a growing number of child COVID-19 cases statewide. … The governor unveiled the latest data from the Ohio Department of Health, showing child COVID-19 cases climbed to 12.8% when cases in children only made up 2.4% back in March.”

Minnesota — Star Tribune: “Children, teens fuel Minnesota COVID-19 case growth”

Florida — CNN: “Florida’s number of official Covid-19 cases in children has more than doubled over the past month, data from the state showed Tuesday. … In Florida, the total number of cases in children 17 and under rose from 16,797 on July 9 to 39,735 on August 9 — an increase of 137%, according to Florida Department of Health data.”

Pennsylvania — Penn Live: “Several student athletes at Central Dauphin High School have tested positive for the coronavirus, prompting the district to cancel team workouts and gatherings for all sports for the next week. According to school district officials, the student athletes had been exposed to someone with COVID-19 and, as a result, have received positive tests.”

Texas — San Antonio Express-News: “A Comal ISD high school student tested positive for COVID-19 during a school band camp, according to a letter sent to parents over the weekend. … The positive case comes only weeks before the school district will begin in-person instruction on Aug. 25.”

Hawaii — Honolulu Civil Beat: “Thirteen positive coronavirus cases have been reported across Hawaii Department of Education schools since the summer, the DOE said Tuesday, shortly after the teachers union pressed the department and health officials for greater transparency in school-based cases as many students return to school next week.”

Indiana — Indianapolis Star: “A Greenfield-Central High School student has tested positive for COVID-19, Superintendent Harold Olin said. The student attended school last week.”

Arkansas — The Daily Citizen: “The Searcy School District has been informed that three of its student-athletes — a football player and two members of the Lionsteppers – have tested positive for COVID-19.”

Meanwhile, a growing majority of voters oppose Trump’s push to fully reopen schools.

Politico: “A growing majority of voters oppose the Trump administration’s demand that schools and colleges fully open for in-person instruction, according to a new POLITICO/Morning Consult poll. In the survey of nearly 2,000 registered voters, 59 percent said they oppose fully reopening K-12 schools for the beginning of the academic year. Those numbers are up from polling last month that showed 53 percent opposed.”

Trump Lies That He’s Helping Farmers And Shows How He Got Played By China

12 Aug

In an interview yesterday, Trump continued to lie about helping farmers and once again made clear that he has given up on a phase two trade deal after settling for a phase one deal that left the biggest issues with China unaddressed in exchange for purchases to help his reelection, which aren’t happening. It’s obvious that Trump got played.

Trump made clear that a phase two trade deal isn’t happening and claimed that farmers are in business now because of him.

TRUMP: “The last thing I think about right now is phase two. It’s the last thing I’m thinking about right now, is a China phase two deal.”

TRUMP: “You ever notice you never hear anything bad from the farmers? It’s because they hit pay dirt because of me. Without me, they would be out of business right now. They hit pay dirt. We gave them $28 billion for targeted aid.”

Farm bankruptcies increased this year and thousands of farmers are out of business because of Trump’s failed trade policy and coronavirus response.

Wall Street Journal: “More U.S. farmers are filing for bankruptcy, as federal payments projected to reach record levels this year fall short of compensating for the coronavirus pandemic and a yearslong slump in the agricultural economy. About 580 farmers filed for chapter 12 bankruptcy protection in the 12-month period ended June 30, according to federal data. That was 8% more than a year earlier, though bankruptcies slowed slightly in the first half of 2020 partly because of an infusion of federal aid and hurdles to filing during the pandemic, according to agricultural economists and attorneys.”

Trump settled for a phase one deal that left the biggest issues unaddressed in exchange for purchases to help his reelection, but they aren’t happening.

Bloomberg: “The six-month review of the U.S.-China phase-one trade deal is set to take place against a backdrop of rising acrimony, and the fact that Beijing’s purchases under the agreement continue to fall substantially short.”

Barrons: “But according to data compiled by the Peterson Institute for International Economics (PIIE), Chinese agricultural purchases at the end of June were far from where they should be at this point in the year. They had reached only 39 percent of their semi-annual target, according to US figures.”

Reuters: “China bought only 5% of the targeted $25.3 billion in energy products from the United States in the first half of 2020, falling well short of its trade deal commitments at a time when relations between the two top economies are already sour.”

Trump lost his trade war with China, and few U.S. businesses say the trade war he started was worth it.

Reuters: “Few U.S. companies doing business in China view President Donald Trump’s Phase 1 trade deal as being worth the cost of tariffs incurred over a two-year trade war, a new survey by the U.S.-China Business Council showed on Tuesday. The trade group said that just 7% of respondents to its annual membership survey said that the benefits from the Phase 1 agreement outweigh the costs of tariffs incurred along the way.”

DNC Chair on Third Anniversary of Deadly White Supremacy Rally in Charlottesville

12 Aug

DNC Chair Tom Perez released the following statement on the third anniversary of the white supremacist rally in Charlottesville, VA, and the murder of Heather Heyer by one of the rally’s participants:

“Three years ago today, our nation watched in horror as hate and bigotry flooded the streets of Charlottesville. White supremacists, emboldened by this president, left their hoods at home and marched in torchlight, unafraid to show their faces. They chanted racist and anti-Semitic slurs, celebrated symbols of slavery, and viciously murdered Heather Heyer, who had shown up to fight back against their message of hate.

“Instead of condemning the neo-Nazis and Klan members leading this movement, President Trump defended them as ‘very fine people.’ And in the three years since, Trump and his allies have not only allowed such hatred to go unchecked, they have actively encouraged and enabled its perpetrators.

“What we saw three years ago was not an isolated incident. It was the product of a country being led by those more interested in stoking fear and division than hope and unity; by those who believe in fueling hate instead of fighting it. It was a result of the systemic racism that plagues every aspect of our society. Make no mistake: The same sentiment that took to the streets in Charlottesville also took the life of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

“This November, voters will not only make their voices heard on critical issues like health care, Medicare, Medicaid, and Social Security. Bigotry will also be on the ballot. And as Americans, we need to elect a president and vice president who will fight for dignity, equality, and justice for all. We need an administration that will confront our nation’s history of racism, not celebrate it from the Oval Office. Unlike Donald Trump, Joe Biden and Kamala Harris know there are not ‘many sides’ to the issue of white supremacy. There is right and wrong. In fact, it was this display of unbridled hatred that inspired Vice President Biden to take on Donald Trump and restore the soul of our nation. Those who gathered in Charlottesville in the name of racism were wrong, and it is up to all of us to stand up for what is right.”
