NEW: Pence Group Urges Congress to Pass Extreme Abortion Bans

18 Jan

Mike Pence is pushing his extremism on abortion to a new level today by calling on Congress to advance his dangerous anti-choice agenda and pass legislation that could pave the way to ban Plan B, some forms of birth control, and access to abortion nationwide with no exceptions for rape or incest. Pence has made his anti-abortion stances the hallmark of his shadow campaign for the 2024 Republican primary – drawing his fellow GOP contenders to showcase their extremism as well as they each compete for the MAGA base.

Headlining the slate of anti-abortion legislation that Pence’s non-profit is calling on Congress to pass is legislation that could open the door to ban Plan B and some forms of birth control.

Advancing American Freedom Agenda: “We are calling on the 118th Congress to reintroduce these important measures and send them to the President’s desk to be enacted.”

TIME: “Fetal personhood laws could also impact contraception access, given that some members of the anti-abortion movement argue that IUDs and the emergency contraception Plan B can prevent the implantation of a fertilized egg and violate personhood, explains Mary Ziegler, an abortion law historian.”

On top of this, the list of proposed legislation also includes an extreme abortion ban that threatens doctors with jail time and has no exceptions for rape or incest.

WESA: “Kelly’s ‘Heartbeat Protection Act’ would essentially ban abortion after the sixth week of pregnancy — a time by which a pregnancy may not even have been detected… the bill provides no exception for pregnancies arising from rape or incest.”

This is just the latest from Pence as he continues to brag about his role in the overturning of Roe v. Wade and insists on fellow Republicans joining his push to ban abortion in every state.

CNN: “Pence recently retweeted a statement from the anti-abortion advocacy organization Susan B. Anthony Pro-Life America responding to Trump’s remarks in which the group urged the former president and other potential candidates to articulate an ‘ambitious consensus pro-life position’ and avoid an ‘Ostrich Strategy’ on abortion. ‘Well Said!’ Pence tweeted.”

Politico: “Pence has repeatedly touted and taken credit for the anti-abortion policies of the Trump administration, openly courting the support of anti-abortion groups as he considers a 2024 run.”

Pence is far from the only Republican putting their abortion extremism on display as 2024 GOP hopefuls – including Glenn Younkin, Ron DeSantis, and Kristi Noem – seek to curry favor with the MAGA base by pushing their own anti-choice proposals.

Slate: “Virginia Republicans’ Proposed 15-Week Abortion Ban Is Strikingly Extreme

Florida Politics: “Gov. DeSantis ‘ready to sign’ abortion ‘heartbeat bill’”

CBS: “Gov. Kristi Noem says she would ‘nudge’ GOP governors, including Florida’s Ron DeSantis, to do more to restrict abortion”

Meet Your MAGA Committee Chairmen

18 Jan

In exchange for the speaker’s gavel, Kevin McCarthy is rewarding extreme MAGA Republicans with chairmanships and plum posts on key committees.

Under Kevin McCarthy, world-class fraudster George Santos has been seated on not one, but two different committees. Santos has lied repeatedly about his resume and even misled about his real name.

Huffington Post: “Watch George Santos Bizarrely Mislead About His Name In Startling Video”

And as promised, McCarthy reinstalled Marjorie Taylor Greene and Paul Gosar to committee posts after they BOTH attended a white nationalist conference in 2021 organized by Nick Fuentes.

Axios“GOP hardliners reap benefits of McCarthy speaker deal”

CNN: “Republican Reps. Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia and Paul Gosar of Arizona have been given committee assignments for the new Congress, after being booted from their committees by Democrats and some Republicans for their incendiary remarks.”

McCarthy also rewarded MAGA Congresswoman Lauren Boebert of Colorado with a sought-after seat on the Oversight Committee.

Business Insider: “GOP Freedom Caucus is reaping its reward for holding House speaker election ransom, with even holdout Boebert given plum committee role”

Also on the Oversight Committee is House Freedom Caucus Chairman Scott Perry — thanks to Kevin McCarthy’s backroom dealings.

Semafor: “Several members of the House Freedom Caucus were added to the high-profile House Oversight Committee, including Marjorie Taylor Greene and Paul Gosar as well as Reps. Lauren Boebert and Scott Perry.”

In fact, the extreme House Freedom Caucus has major influence over nearly all of the top four “A” committees in Congress.

Axios“And nearly every ‘A’ committee — the four most desirable panels — got new members associated with the Freedom Caucus: Reps. Andrew Clyde (R-Ga.) and Michael Cloud (R-Texas) will serve on Appropriations, while Donalds and Rep. Andy Ogles (R-Tenn.) will be on Financial Services.”

Fellow MAGA Congressman Matt Gaetz got to keep a coveted seat on the Judiciary Committee after he nearly tanked Kevin McCarthy’s speaker bid.

NBC News: “Rep. Matt Gaetz of Florida, perhaps the most vocal McCarthy foe during the speaker fight, who flipped to ‘present’ in the 14th round, will continue to serve on the Judiciary panel.”

The committee chairmen are just as extreme, too: Texas Congressman Jodey Arrington, who’s now in charge of the Budget Committee, has repeatedly said that he will use his position to come after Social Security and Medicare.

Jack Fitzpatrick, Bloomberg: “Some key points on new Budget Chairman @RepArrington’s plans:
– Wants Reagan-O’Neill style talks on Social Security solvency
– Says debt limit is opportunity to get fiscally conservative measures
– Has supported [discretionary] spending caps”

Bloomberg Government: “A bipartisan negotiation on Social Security and Medicare would likely start with Democrats pushing for more revenue, while ‘Republicans have a list of eligibility reforms, and we don’t like the tax increases,’ Arrington said. He said an increase in the eligibility age for both programs would be a commonsense change.”

Missouri Congressman Jason Smith, who was just appointed chairman of the Ways & Means Committee, has also confirmed that he supports threats to crash the economy in order to push spending cuts to key programs like Social Security and Medicare.

Bloomberg Government: “‘The debt limit is clearly one of those tools that Republicans — that a Republican-controlled Congress — will use to make sure that we do everything we can to make this economy strong,’ said Rep. Jason Smith (R-Mo.) , the ranking member of the House Budget Committee.”

And Alabama Congressman Mike Rogers, who attempted to physically assault his colleague on the House floor two weeks ago, will chair the House Armed Services Committee.

Farnoush Amiri, Associated Press: “🚨Mike RODGERS just tried to charge toward GAETZ, before Richard HUDSON pulled him back and he ran off the House floor.”

In case there was any doubt: MAGA Republicans are running the show with Kevin McCarthy’s full blessing.
