DNC on Arizona GOP’s Efforts to Prevent Secretary of State Katie Hobbs from Protecting AZ Voters

26 May
As Republicans in the Arizona state legislature move forward with a bill to strip Secretary of State Katie Hobbs of her ability to defend election lawsuits until near the end of her term in 2023, DNC Chair Jaime Harrison released the following statement:

“Let’s be clear: Arizona Republicans are lashing out at an outstanding public servant who has worked tirelessly to defend Arizona voters from attacks on their voting rights.

“These proposed restrictions are unjustifiable and undemocratic, and state lawmakers should immediately reject this overtly political attempt to prevent Secretary Hobbs from doing her job.

“While Republicans work to impose Jim Crow-style laws across the country and hobble election officials from administering fair elections, Democrats will use every tool in our toolbox to defend the right to vote and stop the GOP from these brazen attacks on our democracy.”

Poor Kevin McCarthy…It’s Only Tuesday

25 May

Stop us if you’ve heard this before: The Republican Party is a raging dumpster fire, and Kevin McCarthy is doing his best job to keep the fire going.

“It took five days for Kevin McCarthy to release a feeble statement about Marjorie Taylor Greene’s recent anti-Semitic comments without lifting a single finger to take action against her. Let us be very clear: Kevin McCarthy and the entire Republican Party leadership have tacitly endorsed every bit of Marjorie Taylor Greene’s disgusting rhetoric in the same way they have enabled Donald Trump’s reckless conspiracy theories.” — DNC Spokesperson Adonna Biel

DNC on One Year Anniversary of George Floyd’s Murder

25 May

One year ago former Minneapolis police officer Derek Chauvin murdered George Floyd. In response, DNC Chair Jaime Harrison and DNC Black Caucus Chair Virgie M. Rollins released the following statement:

“One year ago the world watched as George Floyd was murdered, and today that memory has been seared into our souls and continues to spur the movement for the justice, accountability, and equity Black people deserve. We must not turn away from what we saw – Republicans should join Democrats in sending the George Floyd Justice in Policing Act to President Biden’s desk. Not just in George Floyd’s memory, but also that of Daunte Wright, Breonna Taylor, and the countless others on a list that stretches far too long.”

What They’re Saying: Thanks to President Biden and Democrats, Child Tax Credits Will be “Life-Altering” for Families Across the Country

25 May
Thanks to the American Rescue Plan, an expanded child tax credit will soon cut child poverty nearly in half and deliver benefits to the families of 88% of children in the United States. As columnist Liz Weston put it, “For some, the money will be a lifeline to pay rent, food and other essential expenses. For others, the cash could be a chance to make lasting changes that could help them become more financially stable.”

This much-needed relief comes despite every single Republican in Congress, who unanimously voted to block it. While Republicans continue to speak out against help for the middle class, President Biden and Democrats are fighting to pass the American Families Plan to extend the enhanced child tax credit and permanently make it fully refundable.

Here’s a look at what voters in states across the country are reading about President Biden’s child tax credit:

In Pennsylvania:

The Times Leader: Liz Weston: The checks that could change your financial life

Starting in July, most families with kids will start getting monthly payments of up to $300 per child as part of the American Rescue Plan’s expansion of the child tax credit.

The payments are scheduled to end in December, and it’s unclear whether they will be extended. But even six months of payments could make a big difference in many families’ finances.

For some, the money will be a lifeline to pay rent, food and other essential expenses. For others, the cash could be a chance to make lasting changes that could help them become more financially stable.

In West Virginia:

Beckley Register-Herald: Op-Ed: Tax credits would be “life-altering” for some

But what folks should really be asking is, “What would families do?” with a boost in their bank accounts from a permanent expanded Child Tax Credit and Earned Income Tax Credit.

Pay utility bills on time, pay for car insurance, buy new underwear and a pack of toothbrushes – these are just some of the items on Mary Reinbold’s wishlist. She’s a single mom who works as a loan document processor at a local banking institution. With an extra $250 in her own bank account every month – the amount she would get in monthly installments from the expanded Child Tax Credit – she’s even started to dream about being able to afford a spontaneous ice cream cone from the corner store for her 7-year-old daughter.

“This would be life-altering for me and my family,” Mary said. “I won’t have to take toilet paper from the gas station bathrooms anymore. Did you know you’re supposed to change your toothbrush every three months?”

In Maine:

Bangor Daily News: Pandemic relief gave families a path out of poverty. Let’s make it permanent.

But good things have come out of that hardship. Late last month, President Joe Biden signed the American Rescue Plan Act, which expands the Child Tax Credit and the Earned Income Tax Credit. The expansion of the Child Tax Credit will put up to $3,600 more a year, per child, into the hands of nearly every family with children, many of whom desperately need it. The expansion will bring more than $435 million to Maine families. And starting this summer, that amount will be paid monthly, which will be a huge boon for parents who struggle to earn enough to pay the more than $1,000 a month it costs to house, feed and clothe a child.

In Maryland:

Baltimore Sun: Cutting child poverty in half is within our grasp | READER COMMENTARY

President Joe Biden also proposes extending the increased child tax credit amount ($3,000-plus per child) until 2025. These steps are important, but Congress must make all the changes permanent, including the credit increase. Columbia University estimates this new child tax credit will cut child poverty by 45%. We can pay for this by asking the wealthy and corporations to finally pay their fair share.

If you could cut child poverty in half, why would you not do it? I urge our representatives and senators to make the new CTC and EITC provisions at 2021 levels permanent in recovery legislation.

NEW VIDEO: DNC Chair Corrects the Record on GOP Lies About Unemployment Benefits

24 May
In a new video, DNC Chair Jaime Harrison corrects the record on Republican talking points that unemployment benefits are keeping Americans from wanting to return to work. The Republican Party’s argument is hypocritical and not supported by the evidence. Instead of trying to kick people while they’re down, Republicans should join President Biden and Democrats in working to pass the American Jobs Plan and the American Families Plan so that we can continue to get Americans back to work.

COVID Numbers Hit Lows Not Seen Since Last Summer, No Thanks to Republicans

24 May
The pandemic is in retreat as new cases and deaths hit levels not seen since last summer, and vaccinations continue to increase. From their willingness to blindly follow Trump as he mismanaged the pandemic, to unanimous votes against the American Rescue Plan, Republicans deserve no credit as our country recovers.

Thanks to President Biden and Democrats’ leadership, COVID cases and deaths have fallen to levels not seen since last summer.

New York Times: “Covid News: Virus Cases, Deaths Drop to Levels Not Seen Since Last Summer”

CNBC: “U.S. is recording fewer than 30,000 daily new Covid cases for the first time in nearly a year.”

Over 60% of American adults have received at least one dose of the vaccine, and 25 states have fully vaccinated at least half of their adult population.

CNN’s Kaitlan Collins: “25 states and DC have now fully vaccinated at least half their adult populations, per CDC data.”

USA Today’s Courtney Subramanian: “More than 60% of American adults have received at least one COVID-19 vaccine shot as of today, @PressSec says, w/ an average of 24k covid cases per day.”

Republicans Play Politics After January 6 Insurrection

21 May
Despite the five lives lost at the United States Capitol on January 6, and the stain that day left on our democracy, Republicans are doing everything they can to try to sweep it under the rug, all for the sake of protecting their electoral prospects.

Instead of voting for an independent, bipartisan commission to investigate the event, Republicans are playing politics to protect Donald Trump, and themselves, from having to testify about their part in the insurrection.

CNN: “Even on a grave matter of national security, the GOP has concluded that the political price for standing with former President Donald Trump is preferable to the electoral cost of breaking with the disgraced former President.”

New York Times: “Leading congressional Republicans offer multiple justifications for why they oppose an independent commission to investigate the Jan. 6 attack on the Capitol by a pro-Trump mob, but there is really one overriding reason: They fear it will hurt their party’s image and hinder their attempts to regain power in next year’s midterm elections.”

Washington Post – Opinion: “But let’s not lose sight of this fundamental truth. What Republicans must obscure is that they are covering up Jan. 6 not because they don’t want to re-litigate the past, but because they don’t want to litigate what the party currently is — and what it’s becoming.”

DNC Launches Ad Buy in American Samoa Celebrating AAPI Heritage Month

20 May

This week, at an earlier point than any previous election cycle, the Democratic National Committee launched a significant ad buy in AAPI outlets across the country and in American Samoa as part of a campaign to celebrate AAPI Heritage Month.

The new campaign underscores DNC Chair Jaime Harrison’s dedication to investing early in communities of color ahead of the 2022 midterm elections. The ads are translated into traditional Chinese, Korean, and Vietnamese and placed in over 50 outlets in more than 25 states and territories.

“The AAPI community has made tremendous contributions to our nation and were an integral element of Democrats regaining control of the White House and U.S. Senate,” said DNC Deputy Executive Director Roger Lau. “The DNC knows in order to expand upon our success with AAPI voters in American Samoa we need to invest deeply and early. From the American Rescue Plan to passing the COVID-19 Hate Crimes Act, Democrats have made good on our promises and delivered for the AAPI community. These ads show that we’re not done delivering the help the AAPI community in American Samoa needs.”

American Rescue Plan Funds Providing “Fuel for Optimism” Across the Country

20 May
This week, Americans all across the country are continuing to see the positive impacts of the American Rescue Plan as state and local governments begin to put the billions they received to good use. From significant investments in rural broadband, to the expanded Child Tax Credit, aid from the American Rescue Plan is a game changer for communities hit hardest by the pandemic — no thanks to the Republicans who voted against it.

Funds from the American Rescue Plan are a once-in-a-generation opportunity to invest in a recovery that benefits everyone, and state Democratic leaders are getting to work using these funds to upgrade rural broadband, help with higher education, and support clean drinking water.

In Wisconsin: Milwaukee Journal Sentinel: Wisconsin rural broadband getting $100 million boost from federal program

“The state Public Service Commission will launch $100 million in broadband grant funding in the next two weeks from the federal American Rescue Plan Act, Gov. Tony Evers said Tuesday.

“It’s the initial batch of federal funds to be allocated for expanding high-speed internet service across the state, according to the governor, and it’s more than the state has spent on broadband expansion grants since 2013.”

In North Carolina: ABC11: Gov. Cooper unveils recommendations for NC’s American Rescue Plan funds

“The $5.7 billion in federal funds offer a once-in-a-generation opportunity to invest in North Carolina and ensure a shared recovery from the global pandemic, Cooper said. His recommendations include assisting families most affected by the pandemic, upgrading infrastructure, help with higher education and preparing the state’s workforce.”

Local leaders — both Democrats and Republicans — are speaking out about how American Rescue Plan funds have been a massive help for their communities.

In Michigan: Lansing State Journal: American Rescue Plan gives our communities the opportunity for local first pandemic recovery

“As a group of bipartisan mayors representing Michigan’s core urban cities, we’re hopeful about our communities’ ability to emerge from the COVID-19 pandemic with a strong recovery. The recently approved American Rescue Plan Act (ARPA) is fuel for our optimism.”

In Ohio: Columbus Dispatch: Opinion: Child Tax Credit welcome relief for Ohio families

“The pandemic has been a struggle for parents, and the American Rescue Plan includes some game-changing elements that will massively help Ohio families weather this challenging financial time. […]

“This groundbreaking legislation puts money in the pockets of families like mine—stimulating the economy while helping pay for everyday needs, supporting childcare facilities and helping schools reopen safely.”

In Pennsylvania: The Morning Call: Congresswoman Susan Wild, Lehigh Valley leaders say Rescue Plan funding will fuel strong recovery for local governments

“I don’t need to explain to anybody how challenging the last year has been from the emergency room to Main Street. Our local governments have been pushed to the brink while facing an economic crisis and a public health crisis,” Wild said. “This funding says loud and clear that they will not bear this burden alone.”’
