DNC on Latest Unemployment Numbers

9 Jul

After the U.S. Department of Labor released the latest unemployment claims numbers, DNC Chair and former Labor Secretary Tom Perez issued the following statement:

“Another week of the Trump administration, another week of historic economic hardship for millions of working families. 50 million American workers have now had to apply for unemployment benefits. For the 16th consecutive week, more than a million Americans have filed for unemployment claims. And yesterday, our nation hit another record high for new coronavirus cases.

“It didn’t have to be this bad. Trump failed to contain this virus and now cases are surging across the country, states are being forced to close once more, and people are losing their jobs and their lives every single day. This is Donald Trump’s America. This is the unprecedented  hardship and heartbreak his incompetence has caused. We need real leadership in the White House. We need a president with a plan to bring us together and move us forward, to contain this pandemic and lift us from recession, to create good-paying jobs and revitalize American manufacturing, to invest in American innovation and ingenuity. Joe Biden has a vision to do just that.”

The full picture of Trump’s economy:

Last week, 2.3 million Americans filed new claims for some form of unemployment assistance—this crisis is not improving.

CBS News: “Jobless claims remain high, with 2.3 million seeking aid last week.”

Trump continues to make things worse. Workers are getting laid off for a second time as states are forced to pause reopenings.

Washington Post: “The pandemic map of the United States burned bright red Monday, with the number of new coronavirus infections during the first six days of July nearing 300,000 as more states and cities moved to reimpose shutdown orders.”

Washington Post: “Workers are getting laid off for a second time, as the virus’s surge puts reopenings on hold”

The unemployment rate is still higher than any period since WWII at 11.1%, and would be even higher if not for misclassification issues in the data.

New York Times: “The unemployment rate fell to 11.1 percent, down from a peak of 14.7 percent in April but still higher than in any previous period since World War II. The rate would have been about one percentage point higher had it not been for persistent data-collection problems, the Labor Department said.”

The unemployment rate for minorities, especially Black Americans, remains far higher than for White Americans.

New York Times: “The U.S. unemployment rate fell to 11.1 percent in June, data released Thursday showed, but minority unemployment remained higher — especially for Black workers.  Black adults saw their unemployment rate ease to 15.4 percent, the data showed. Hispanic unemployment fell to 14.5 percent in June, compared to 17.6 percent in May. The Asian unemployment rate stood at 13.8 percent, down from 15 percent the prior month.”

The number of permanent job losses rose by 588,000 in June to 2.9 million.

Bureau of Labor Statistics: “The number of permanent job losers continued to rise, increasing by 588,000 to 2.9 million in June.”

Republicans refuse to support extending enhanced unemployment benefits and are instead prioritizing more tax cuts for investors and corporations.

NBC News: “The $600 federal unemployment benefit ends this month. GOP senators say enough already.”

NBC News: “In interviews By NBC News with nearly a dozen GOP senators on Tuesday, one consistent theme emerged: They are certain they don’t want to extend the $600 per week in emergency jobless compensation because they widely agree that it is motivating people to stay out of work.”

Washington Post: “While it is clear Trump is eager to pass a payroll tax cut, a cut to taxes on capital gains, and deductions for the restaurant and entertainment industries, the administration has not formulated a concrete proposal, and these ideas have largely been dismissed by Congressional lawmakers.”

Trump Puts Children At Risk By Not Ensuring Schools Can Reopen Safely

9 Jul

Trump rushed to reopen states and churches, and to hold campaign rallies before it could be done safely. As a result, new coronavirus cases spiked. Trump has learned nothing and is now pushing to reopen schools without ensuring it can be done safely, and even pressuring his own CDC to water down safety recommendations.

Trump recklessly pushed to reopen states — cases spiked.

Washington Post: “Rush to reopen led to spikes in cases that threaten to overwhelm hospitals in some states, officials say”

Trump recklessly demanded to reopen churches — cases spiked.

New York Times: “Weeks after President Trump demanded that America’s shuttered houses of worship be allowed to reopen, new outbreaks of the coronavirus are surging through churches across the country where services have resumed.”

Trump recklessly held campaign rallies — cases spiked.

Associated Press: “President Donald Trump’s campaign rally in Tulsa in late June that drew thousands of participants and large protests ‘likely contributed’ to a dramatic surge in new coronavirus cases, Tulsa City-County Health Department Director Dr. Bruce Dart said Wednesday.”

Will Trump do the same with our schools?

CNN: “President Donald Trump’s new push to open schools shows he’s learned nothing from calamities sparked by his demands for premature state openings.”

New York Times: “President Trump pressured the government’s top public health experts on Wednesday to water down recommendations for how the nation’s schools could reopen safely this fall and threatened to cut federal funding for districts that defied his demand to resume classes in person.”

MEMO: Trump’s Taxes

9 Jul

MEMORANDUM
TO: Interested Parties

FROM: DNC War Room

DATE: Thursday, July 9, 2020

RE: Trump’s Taxes

The Supreme Court will rule this morning on whether Trump’s tax documents must be turned over to criminal and congressional investigators who have lawfully subpoenaed them. Trump has gone to extraordinary lengths to block his taxes from being released, making legally dubious arguments that lower courts have repeatedly ruled against. Trump believes he is above the law, cannot be criminally prosecuted, and should be able to hide his taxes from the American people.

So what is Trump so desperate to hide? Likely a decades-long scheme of stealing from American taxpayers. Reporting has already revealed Trump’s long history of tax fraud, dubiously avoiding taxes, and potentially paying bribes to lower his tax bill. To cover up his years of tax fraud, Trump has lied about his taxes, broken with decades of precedent and refused to release his returns after pledging to do so, and gone to extraordinary lengths to block his taxes from being released.

The American people deserve to know the depth of Trump’s corruption.

Trump broke with decades of precedent and refused to release his tax returns after saying for years that he would if he ran, and suggesting that candidates are hiding something if they don’t.

  • Every major presidential candidate since 1976 had released at least one full tax return.

  • 2012 — TRUMP: “If you didn’t see the tax returns you would think there is almost like something wrong. What’s wrong?”

  • 2014 — TRUMP: “If I decide to run for office, I’ll produce my tax returns, absolutely.”

  • 2016 — TRUMP: “Well, we’re working on that now. I have very big returns, as you know, and I have everything all approved and very beautiful and we’ll be working that over in the next period of time, Chuck. Absolutely.”

  • 2016 — DICKERSON: Your tax returns, when are we going to see them? TRUMP: “I would say, over the next three, four months. We’re working on them very hard.”

Trump repeatedly lied to Americans about his taxes and falsely claimed his returns wouldn’t provide any new information.

  • Washington Post: “Trump falsely claims that voters would learn nothing from his tax returns. To the contrary, voters would learn a lot of information that Trump has long tried to hide from the public. … Four Pinocchios.”

  • PolitiFact: “Trump said that he has ‘released the most extensive financial review of anybody in the history of politics. … You don’t learn much in a tax return.’ … However, experts consider that a red herring. Unlike all presidential nominees since 1980, Trump has not released his tax returns, which experts say would offer valuable details on his effective tax rate, the types of taxes he paid, and how much he gave to charity, as well as a more detailed picture of his income-producing assets. Trump’s statement is inaccurate. We rate it False.”

Trump broke his promises and repeatedly sued to block his taxes from being released to criminal and congressional investigators.

  • Washington Post: “Trump sued his own accounting firm and the Democratic chairman of the House Oversight Committee at the same time Monday — trying an unusual tactic to stop the firm from giving the committee details about Trump’s past financial dealings.”

  • New York Times: “Trump, his three eldest children and his private company filed a federal lawsuit on Monday against Deutsche Bank and Capital One, in a bid to prevent the banks from responding to congressional subpoenas.”

  • CNBC: “Trump on Thursday filed a lawsuit against Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. and his longtime accounting firm, days after news broke that the prosecutor had subpoenaed years of Trump’s personal and corporate tax returns.”

Trump’s arguments against the subpoenas are legally dubious and have been repeatedly dismissed by courts.

What we do know: Trump paid close to nothing in taxes for at least five years.

  • Politico: “Trump appears to have paid no taxes for two years in early 1990s”

  • Washington Post: “The last time Donald Trump’s income-tax returns were made public, the bottom line was striking: He had paid the federal government $0 in income taxes.”

  • New York Times: “In 1978 and 1979, the report said, Mr. Trump paid no federal income taxes.”

  • New York Times: “Tax court records indicate that Mr. Trump also avoided paying any federal income taxes in 1984.”

  • New York Times: “Donald J. Trump declared a $916 million loss on his 1995 income tax returns, a tax deduction so substantial it could have allowed him to legally avoid paying any federal income taxes for up to 18 years, records obtained by The New York Times show.”

Trump has repeatedly bragged about avoiding paying taxes.

  • TRUMP: “Of course” I avoided paying federal income taxes using a loss from 1995.

  • TRUMP: “She said maybe you didn’t pay taxes and I said well, that would make me smart because tax is a big payment.”

  • CNBC: “Trump brags about not paying taxes: ‘That makes me smart’”

Trump stole from the American people by participating in tax fraud to build his fortune.

  • Trump participated in “dubious tax schemes” and “outright fraud” to avoid taxes on the current equivalent of at least $413 million given to him by his father.

  • Trump’s family even used shell companies to siphon off millions of dollars by marking up purchases they had already made.

  • The Trumps’ scheme for tax dodging also enabled them to fraudulently increase rent on thousands of tenants in rent-controlled apartments.

  • New York Times: “Tax experts briefed on The Times’s findings said the Trumps appeared to have done more than exploit legal loopholes. They said the conduct described here represented a pattern of deception and obfuscation.”

Trump has a long and fraudulent history of avoiding state and local taxes — even potentially paying bribes to get out of paying his fair share.

  • ProPublica: “Trump’s Company Paid Bribes to Reduce Property Taxes, Assessors Say”

  • When Trump was sworn into office, he was fighting at least a half dozen tax bills from local and state governments across the country — creating conflicts of interest.

  • Trump has gone to extraordinary lengths to lower his state and local tax bills — suing Palm Beach County five years in a row, filing six lawsuits in New York City, and lobbying for a tax break for his golf course.

Ahead of Pence Visit, DNC Launches Digital Ads In Lancaster Highlighting Trump’s Coronavirus Failures

9 Jul

Ahead of Vice President Pence’s visit to Lancaster, Pennsylvania, today the Democratic National Committee is launching new digital ads reaching voters in the Lancaster area that highlight how the Trump administration’s coronavirus response has failed Pennsylvanians and how cases are rising in the state. The total number of U.S. cases of coronavirus surpassed 3 million on Tuesday.

“Trump failed to prepare for coronavirus, he was totally ineffective in responding to it, and now Pennsylvanians are paying the price.” said DNC Spokesperson Maddie McComb. “Nothing Vice President Pence says today can change how Trump’s failed response has cost Pennsylvanians their lives and jobs, and these ads will ensure voters know the facts about his incompetence in this time of crisis.”

Democrats are also greeting Pence to the Keystone State with a press call on Wednesday afternoon featuring Rep. Madeleine Dean, Rep. Brendan Boyle, State Sen. Sharif Street, and State Rep. Mike Sturla to discuss how Trump and Pence’s failed coronavirus response has left the Pennsylvania economy in dire shape. Last week, the DNC’s War Room also released a new ad to highlight how coronavirus is exploding again across the country thanks to President Trump’s failures. Last month, the DNC also released a television advertisement in the Pittsburgh media market highlighting the Trump administration’s broken promises on trade and the economy, and hosted a press call with Senator Elizabeth Warren and Pennsylvania Democrats focused on how Trump’s failure to stand up China has hurt working families.

These digital display banner ads will run on Thursday, July 9 during Vice President Pence’s visit and reach targeted voters in greater Lancaster, PA.  Images of the ads are below:

DNC on Trump’s Meeting with President of Mexico

8 Jul

DNC Chair Tom Perez released the following statement as Donald Trump meets with Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador at the White House:

“Five years ago last month, Donald Trump launched his campaign by calling Mexican immigrants ‘rapists’ and drug dealers. As president, he’s continued to target and tear apart immigrant communities at every turn–from separating families at the border to trying to end protections for Dreamers and ending protections for TPS recipients. He has wasted taxpayer dollars and stolen from the military to pay for his ineffective border wall, which he outrageously suggested would help mitigate coronavirus. Now, Trump is meeting with the Mexican president at the White House, where he will ignore all these issues and disingenuously try to take credit for a trade deal that Democrats played a critical role in securing and strengthening. ¡Que descaro! Latino communities, immigrants, and the American people deserve a president with the empathy and experience to lead us forward, not a demagogue who cheers on bigotry from the White House. They deserve better than Donald Trump’s failed leadership. They deserve Joe Biden.”

Trump Threatens To Weaken Protections And Take Away Funding Schools Need To Safely Reopen

8 Jul

Trump is pushing to reopen schools without ensuring that it can be done so safely. He is trying to weaken protections and threatening to take away funding that schools say they will need to safely reopen. Trump rushed to reopen states without doing so safely, and we know how that turned out—now he’s at it again.

Trump pressured the CDC to weaken guidelines intended to keep children, teachers, and staff safe at schools—and overruled health experts to issue guidance with fewer protections.

TRUMP: “I disagree with @CDCgov on their very tough & expensive guidelines for opening schools. While they want them open, they are asking schools to do very impractical things. I will be meeting with them!!!”

NBC News: “The White House is preparing to release new reopening guidelines for schools as President Donald Trump threatened on Wednesday to ‘cut off’ funding for institutions that do not reopen this fall. White House officials said on Wednesday the guidance released earlier this summer by the Centers for Disease Control are too restrictive.”

NBC News’s Peter Alexander: “The Vice President [said] … we don’t want what the public health experts are telling you to be the reason that you can’t reopen.”

Trump used European countries as an example in his rush to reopen schools, but ignored how they reopened safely. Due to Trump’s failure to address the coronavirus, cases continue to rise rapidly across the U.S. while most European countries have mitigated the virus’s spread.

TRUMP: “In Germany, Denmark, Norway,  Sweden and many other countries, SCHOOLS ARE OPEN WITH NO PROBLEMS. The Dems think it would be bad for them politically if U.S. schools open before the November Election, but is important for the children & families. May cut off funding if not open!”

CNN’s Jennifer Hansler: “Germany, Denmark, Norway and Sweden COMBINED have 2.7M fewer confirmed cases of COVID-19 and 116K fewer deaths than the US, per data from Johns Hopkins”

Vox’s Aaron Rupar: “Germany had 390 new coronavirus cases on Tuesday. The US had 50,940.”

Trump is threatening to cut funding to schools at a time when schools say they need more funding to safely reopen.

Politico: “Trump threatens to cut federal funds from schools that don’t reopen”

NBC News: “Schools want to reopen safely. Without federal funds, many worry they can’t.”

Fox News: “Teachers union leader insists schools will need more funding to reopen on time amid pandemic”

Washington Post: “Districts still say they need billions of new dollars from Congress to enact their plans and ensure they have enough protective gear for adults and children, but exactly how much they need isn’t clear. Nor is the intent or timing of U.S. legislators… Hundreds of thousands of teachers and other school personnel have already been laid off as a result of the coronavirus, he said.. .And a Democratic-led House bill passed recently calls for $58 billion in new funding for K-12 schools.’

DNC on U.S. Surpassing 3 Million Cases

8 Jul

In response to the U.S. surpassing three million confirmed coronavirus cases, DNC War Room Director Adrienne Watson released the following statement:

“Trump failed America on coronavirus from day one. He downplayed the virus and failed to prepare, letting China off the hook to help himself politically. And Trump’s still failing us. Trump and the White House said months ago that ‘the worst’ of the pandemic was already over, and yet the United States just surpassed three million cases.

“Trump said we would win so much, we’d get tired of winning. Well, now we’re number one — first in the world in coronavirus deaths and confirmed cases. If this is what winning looks like to Trump, then the American people have had enough.”

DNC on SCOTUS Attacking Reproductive Health Care

8 Jul

DNC Chair Tom Perez and DNC Women’s Caucus Chair Lottie Shackelford released the following statement after the U.S. Supreme Court ruled that employers can deny birth control coverage:

“Reproductive care is not a luxury – it is a necessity. That’s why President Obama and Vice President Biden fought to pass the ACA and its contraception guarantee in 2010. And since then, more than 55 million Americans have gained access to birth control with no co-pay through the Affordable Care Act. This decision is an egregious attack on the rights of women and those seeking reproductive care, especially in communities of color. Democrats will keep fighting to make sure everyone has the right to make decisions about their own body, their own family, and their own future. Make no mistake: reproductive health care is on the ballot in 2020. And the American people are ready to elect a president they can trust to protect it.”

Azar Lies: Health Care Workers Don’t Get Infected

8 Jul

Today, Secretary Alex Azar claimed that health care workers don’t get infected with coronavirus. The HHS secretary certainly knows that is not true — tens of thousands have been infected and hundreds have died — and is outright lying to the American people to help Trump push for schools to reopen.

Secretary Azar said health care workers don’t get infected with coronavirus because they take appropriate precautions.

AZAR: “We have health care workers, they don’t get infected because they take appropriate precautions.”

But tens of thousands of health care workers have been infected and hundreds have died.

Kaiser Health News: “CDC officials said data provided by the states most closely tracking the occupations of people with the virus suggests that health care workers account for about 11% of COVID-19 infections.”

Washington Post: “More than 77,800 have tested positive for the coronavirus, and more than 400 have died, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, which acknowledges that’s a significant undercount. The nation’s largest nurses union, National Nurses United, puts the total much higher: 939 fatalities among health-care workers, based on reports from its chapters around the country, social media and obituaries.”

Many health care workers still don’t have the protective equipment they need as coronavirus cases spike across the country.

Associated Press: “Protective gear for medical workers begins to run low again”

Forbes: “The dramatic summer spike in coronavirus cases, especially in the South and West, has healthcare professionals fearing a return to the early days of the pandemic when availability of personal protective equipment, or PPE, lagged need and some desperate professionals resorted to wearing garbage bags.”
