Johnson: Let Trump’s agreement replace the nuclear deal with Iran

UNITED STATES (OBSERVATORY NEWS)

British Prime Minister Boris Johnson on Tuesday called on US President Donald Trump to replace the nuclear deal with Iran with a new deal to ensure it does not have a nuclear weapon.

“If we are going to get rid of it, let’s find an alternative for it and let Trump’s agreement replace it,” Johnson said of the nuclear deal. “That would go a long way.”

“President Trump is a wonderful deal maker … so let us work together to replace the joint comprehensive plan of action with the Trump agreement,” Johnson told the BBC.

Under the 2015 nuclear agreement known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, Iran agreed with China, France, Germany, Russia, Britain and the United States to restrict its nuclear program.

But Trump announced his country’s withdrawal from the agreement in 2018. European powers have repeatedly said they are still backing the deal, but Iran announced earlier this month that it had abandoned restrictions on uranium enrichment in a new blow to the deal.

“If we get rid of this nuclear deal, the JCPOA, this is what Trump wants,” Johnson said. The point I want to make clear to our American friends is that you in one way or another must prevent the Iranians from acquiring a nuclear weapon. ”

He continued, “From the American perspective, this is a defective agreement, which is expired and that whoever negotiated it was President (Barack) Obama. In their view, they have far too many flaws. ”

White House advisor Killian Conway said this month after Iran announced a new reversal of its obligations under the 2015 nuclear deal that Trump was confident he could still renegotiate a new nuclear deal with Tehran.

“I do not want a military conflict between us, between the United States and Iran, let us alleviate the matter,” Johnson said.
