Thousands have been forced to flee their homes in Southern California as fierce winds have whipped up an explosive wildfire in the region.

The fire broke out on Monday morning and quickly grew to more than 15 square miles in Ventura County.

Ventura County is an area just north west of Los Angeles and includes the cities of Ventura, Oxnard, Camarillo and Simi Valley.

The area skirts along Malibu, Beverly Hills and Santa Monica.
